Hello Everyone,

Im new to this site so would like to say hi to everyone and ask a little advice please.

I gave up riding 13 years ago selling my top eventer (sally) it broke my heart and i have regretted giving up ever since.

But i have had a family been married and divorced and out of the blue 2 months ago we got a call saying the lady who we sold my horse to had sadly died and would we like her back!!

I didnt need to think about it the answer was YES YES YES!! so we have her back!

She is 22 years now and was turned out to grass for the last year so not been ridden, but she is in really good condition not over weight, i have put on a few pounds! so not riding her just yet hoping to by the summer! she is rugged up day and night and stabled (on a night)

On a morning she is a little stiff and her back legs seem to click a little (nothing serious) and she isnt lame.

Im feeding her on a night and have just bought a veteran supplement, but a few people have advised to put olive oil in her feed as it will help her joints and coat, can anyone advise on this?

I m a single mum so dont have loads of extra money to spend on things i may not need, but my mum can get olive oil very cheap for me, and wondered if it would be ok?

Any advice would be great

Thank you in advance

sunflower oil is cheaper than olive oil and is supposed to be one of the best joint supplements you can feed for healthy joints. However if this horse has arthritis then a little exercise each day is the best thing to help keep them ticking over providing the horse is only stiff and not lame. Also try to keep the horse out as much as possible if you can keep him/her rugged well and have some kind of shelter from the weather. You could try a proper joint supplement such as cortaflex. I used to use it on one of my horses previously and found it very good.It used to cost me around £18 per month once the initial loading dose was given.

Not sure about olive oil but my mare has sunflower oil in her feed and its helped a bit. Cant say i noticed a huge difference other than a very shiney coat and no weightloss this winter :) Its definatly worth feeding :D

Hey
I'm not sure either ahout olive oil as such but any oil am sure would be beneficial for joint issues, especially fish oils such as cod liver. I used to give my old pony who had arthritis in her hind legs codlivine as well as cod liver oil and cider vinegar which is great for arthritic conditions.

Maybe ring a nutritionist line like D&H to see if olive oil can be tolerated by horses and if so by what quantities.

With my mare I also used to not ride her until the afternoon so she'd have loosened all her joints off in the morning walking round her field. I also used to make her work for her food spacing it out in the stable so she at least got exercise inside as well.

Also just little things like keeping them warm, exta deep beds (even on top of rubber matting helps) I changed my bedding to something that was more cushioning for her. I also had some leg wraps for her back legs to wear on cold days and when she looked particularly stiff.

My mare had no shoes so when it camera trimming her feet I made sure I had a farrier who tool extra care and time so she didn't have her legs lifted too long.

Little things like self massage and daily stretching exercises are also good to do.

I'm so pleased you have your horse back...I always said if my last horse ever needed a home for his retirement I'd have him back in seconds like you but sadly I think that day won't come.

Enjoy your time with her!!

X

Good news that your girl is back. You should NOT feed olive oil to horses sunflower oil will do just fine but careful as too much will lead to a Vit. E deficiency.
Studies now say that cod liver oil is also not good for horses liver and is no longer advised. (Thanks for telling us after we have been feeding it for years)
I would try to keep her out as much as possible with a good warm rug. Exercise will do her very good, A steady hack daily will keep her soft and supple.
good luck and welcome back to the horsey world:):):)

Fab news for you and sounds like good timing!

Her now taking life a bit slower and you getting back into it sounds a good match.

You can buy alpha a with oil in it, i use this for my boys.
Also i have started giving my 16 year old gelding global herbs "old age".

Its not too expensive and lasts well.

Have fun with her!

What a lovely thing to happen, to get your old horse back :) Good luck to you both.
I have an elderly mare who we thought was slightly arthritic. I Used magnet boots at night on her front legs, fed her cider vinegar and a veteran mix that contained glucosamine (I can't remember what it was called) . I kept her warm with cosy rugs and she also had some leg warmers for winter for her back legs. She was exercised daily and was still jumping at 25! The vet checked her and was very impressed by her mobility.
I'm sure you will have years of fun left with your horse.

Thank you all for your kind replys, ill get some sunflour oil today im guessing about 1-2 tablespoons would be enough in her evening feed or may i need a little more?.

Its good to be back in the horsey world again i dont know why i was out of it for so long!!

Thanks again

I have heard that Apple Cider Vinegar is really good, it is quite reasonable to buy as well.

What a really nice story, I am really happy for you x
