Horse currently wears neue schule tranz lozenge baucher - absolutely fine schooling, hacking and dressage, in fact very good. The fun starts SJ and XC when he is quite hard to get back before a fence, he is ridden by a small lady rider with light hands and not a lot of core strength. I think it is pure enthusiasm + a bit of excitement and don;t want to go too far and ruin what we already have, hence a bit scared of gags etc. He has a shallowish mouth so the rubber pelham made him open his mouth... any ideas please?

i would try a full-cheek waterford first, and if that didn't give the results you're looking for, i'd try a myler short-shank combination bit with comfort mouthpiece - it maybe look complicated and fearsome, but since it acts on lots of different areas at once, it is actually not that harsh, and only needs using lightly to have a good effect, imho. i would pad the noseband part with vetrap and/or sheepskin to make it wider and softer.
