I was riding out on my own this morning, very nice ride but on one road i met a big lorry coming towards me, pony is good with traffic so didnt worry, he does spook at random things on the side of the road though. but as lorry was up side of me a car came from behind and squeezed between me and the lorry which i don't think he should have done especially as i had hi viz on with please pass wide and slow written on the back. Pony was very good, but still does make you wonder why people aren't caucious (sp) when meeting horses on the roads.
sorry rant over

We have had cars soooo close to us I have kicked them!!!

And there's nothing like a schooling whip banging on the roof to make the stupid @rses jump.

I was hacking on a "quiet" rode yesterday on my pony and there was a bend, but being on horseback I could see over the hedge and notice a car with horse trailer coming the other way so I stuck my hand out to stop car behind from passing but did he stop? did he heck!!! the car with trailer had to slam his brakes, the poor horse in the back must of been upset and to add insult to injury the driver in the wrong swore at me and put his fingers up to the driver in the car with the trailer. I was wearing hi viz tabbard and pony wearing a hi viz rug. It shocked me as this is normally a quiet road between to small villages. Needless to say the driver was a fat chav who deserved to be shot!!

I have to admit, this one puzzles me.

I drive cars, ride motorbikes and mountain bikes as well as a horse and it is only on a horse that car drivers seem to think it's OK to get within a few inches of the horse. Round here we have a lot of 'older drivers' and they seem to get very close, and then ride the clutch (revving like mad). I have been tempted on more than one occasion to dismount and have a word.

I am only glad my boy is good with traffic, as most of these idiots are close enough to lose a headlamp if he decided to kick out.

Oh I whack them on the roof with the whip and if theyve been a particularly idiotic one I make a big show of clutching my leg and hobbling off the pony.

A fair few around here

The worst lot were at my old yard the wood was hired out for clay pigeon shooting so down the lane to the yard you would get townies in their vans thinking they are all coutryfied because they are going shooting, really bugged me as they had no manners or patience

I couldn't do that with the whip, as it would spook my horse... But I could get off and start wobbling, possibly calling up rather loudly the guy's from ''Have you had an accident which wasn't your fault'' ... lol

I also find alot of people either don't know what arm signals mean or just can't be bothered to follow them.
and they would be the first to complain and push the blame if a horse then damaged their car.

We had some knob try and overtake us as we were turning right into our yard. I cannot repeat on here what I said to him but he sh@t himself, I just flipped.

Normally I just throw a sarcastic comment but how the fook he stopped in time I do not know. Even though all 3 of us were signalling and were actually turning he decided he had right of way.

I hacked out recently and just as I got to turn into the driveway (I was about a 100 yards away) I had a tractor come towards me, and a dustbin waste lorry coming from behind me. And the dog in one of the houses was jumping up, barking. You would have thought at least the dustbin lorry would have stopped. Nope he squished his way through. I did shout 'what a tw*t' at him tho- first time for everything! He just showed no sign of common sense. Luckily pony is traffic proof and we were ok, but it could have been a different matter with anotehr horse!
Makes you wonder doesn't it!

Chaps - if it was a bin lorry then you know who the owners are so report him. Call up your local council or write to them, provide the date, time and location and they WILL have a word with their driver.

Same goes if you have an incident involving any identifiable vehicle, royal mail van, lorry from a haulage company, council vehicle, supermarket delivery van etc etc. They keep records of complaints like this on the drivers file too so you could help prevent a future accident.

I think problems on rural roads have been increased by sat nav, often vehicles are driving down little country lanes because their sat nav sends them that way. Often the distance saved is less than half a mile and the route takes longer to drive - soooo the drivers end up rushing. Or in the case of large vehicles - stuck!

Big problem round our way with HGVs rat running down back lanes rather than staying on the A-roads.

This is very true we had an accident last year with a lorry down a narrow lane, my mums pony spun and slipped resulting in my mum led just inches from being under the still moving lorry, the lorry never stopped. It was all reported to the police a couple of days later as mum didnt want to talk about it but it was a foreign (sp) lorry and they couldn't do anything.

Katt- it was about a month ago now and tbh I didn't really notice who it was as was busy concentrating on the pony (he was less bothered than I was
smirk.gif
) not like he didn't see me either all decked out in flourescents on a straight stretch of road. Ah well, know for next time.
The Severn Trent drivers are always really good, should I call and tell them?
grin.gif
Lol
We're on a few main routes but the in-between roads we hack on don't get much trouble luckily but agree sat navs could well be to blame.

I know i don't get it either, my old, and might i add quite obviously vindictive ex yard owner, who also owns a horse, sped up going past me and my mate riding earlier, i was shocked to say the least! what is wrong with people

Would be lots better if we were allowed to carry a shotgun and blast the back window out of the car, then shout "thank you for passing wide and slow" in a Robocop Arnie type accent.

Time that a blood test was taken when taking a driving exam, anyone with the "twat" gene means automatic failure, would knock about two thirds of the traffic off the roads.

Ooh thats cool then, so you can torch the lorry when you find where it's parked and nothing can be done "because it's foreign" what a crock of shite
