Research by the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science at the University of Liverpool showed that although some obese animals will lose weight on a diet restricted to 1.25 per cent of body weight (based on dry matter), others may need their diet restricted to as little as 1 per cent of body weight to shift surplus pounds.

Such animals have been described as being "weight-loss resistant" in a recent report due to be presented at the Waltham International Symposium in September.

Yup, sounds rather like some ponies I knew... :)

just had a quick scan - the only thing that concerns me is that it doesn't address things like gastric ulcers -- or what about the metabolism actually slowing down? I suppose this is on horses that aren't being exercised, which is ideal for laminitics, but what about horses that are in light to medium work?

i have a shetland type pony who i would describe as tubby/ festively plump at mo, but thats as good as it gets cos he doesn't get any slimmer. I also have a miniature donkey and he is resistant to weight loss always fat, he is 13 now I have owned him for 12 years and hes been on diet for about five years but never seems to lose weight.

One of my friends has a horse (15h) who we swear would survive a nuclear disaster. She is fat and so hardy its unbeleiveable. Full exercise and very fit and gets restricted/limited hay (only enough to keep her ticking over) and no hard feed at all, starvation paddock in summer and in winter is fully clipped and has only medium rug even in coldest of weather and never looses a pound and has more energy than anything fed on oats etc. So can absolutely believe this.
