Some good news and some potentially bad news...

well from my experiance and our kennel experiance we do not reccomend it niether do our vet practice which consists of several vets. I woudl never consider it or even reccomend it, i have seen dogs go "a-wall" and effects on them later on in life, we should not interfere too much so neutering before th edog has matured and hormones are sorted to a certain extent is just plain stupid!

ps i think it is rude to give bad advice

Our vets recommended with him we wait until he's over a year, and with Amber, this is her second season, but the vets wont spay her until 3 months after this season started (which 21 days is up tommorow and then +3)

I can see why the hormones need a chance, even Amber at 18 months has just hit the 'kevin' stage as it were. I have a gut feeling he didnt get his wicked way with her, Im going to book a scan in 2 weeks to make sure, but Im not convinced she is pregnant. (sorry if that sound naive) just the whole way he kept humping her face or standing next to her while gently thrusting, he didnt look like he had a clue. After closely observing them for the last three weeks.

If she is pregnant, then its £96 for the Alizin. Why is it that you try to avoid unwanted litters and they make it so damn expensive to do that.

how much?!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????? no-where near that much here and we're in Bucks, so not exactly a cheap part of the country!

Just goes to show how costs vary from one part of the country to another. Mind you £96 is cheap compared with the cost of rearing a litter of pups the size of Malamutes! Tophorse, obviously different vets have different ideas about ideal age to castrate, I was just saying I thought it a little rude to call Bearhuggz stupid as her ideas were commonly held. Presumably in your experience as a breeding/showing kennel your mother wouldn't have reason to neuter any dogs, kind of defeats the object. I agree with Dantes vets that the ideal time to spay a bitch is mid way between seasons, but I would repeat again that I know of many dogs that have been neutered before 12 months old with no ill effects.

i have neutered plenty of bitches at 6 months with no probs - did a little 5month old crossbred this morning - her uterus was more like a cats in size, which made it a little flimsy especially as she was deep chested and her ovaries were somewhere in her depths, but still easier to do at that age when ligament is weaker. i also did a 7month old lab castrate - he is 27kg already and far too boisterous for his own good - i really doubt castration will adversely affect him in any way.
