Some of you may know my gelding had a PSD operation on both legs in February. All was going well until he got a bad infection suddenly in one hind and was 9/10th lame, lying down and struggling to even stand. A week of injected antibiotics and pain killers by the vet every day, followed by a week oral antibiotics and pain killers with bandage changes every other day by myself and weekly by the vet it eventually started to heal.

The vet and surgeon said he'd need twice as long box rest and were unsure if he’d even come back sound because the wound broke down so badly, let alone the chance of him being ridden again and would probably need long term period of being turned away Pretty devastated in all honesty, haven’t cried like that for years.

The wound has started to heal nicely so he was allowed paddock rest which he jumped out of the paddock twice in a row, great. I started to only allow him out for a hour then have to bring him back in.

The vet visited Friday to be surprised by how fast its healed since he last saw it (10 days) I think the manuka honey bandage has helped endlessly and to my surprise, he asked me to trot him up. Shaking with worry, a friend trotted him up and to my amazement (and the vets!) he actually trotted up sound!! Even though hes barefoot with poor feet, I was surprised he didn’t look foot sore or lame, but nope, sound!

The vet said he could go out 24/7 and mess about all he wanted, all bandages could stay off so the wound could scab up nicely. He also said he could have his shoes back on when I’m ready and bring him back into work if hes sound after that, rather than him needing to be turned away.

I am still going to give him 6 weeks turned away then get him shod and bring him back then.

The photos are of the wound and the healing process over the 3 weeks, should of added what it looks like today as its scabbed over and swelled has nearly gone since being turned out. The white hind in the photo is actually the hind he had the infection in. The other photos are of his first time in the field prancing around and seeing his girlfriends over the fence. He’s back to his usual self as he was showing off a lovely elevated trot around me today when all I wanted to do was take his rug off!

Everything crossed!

Wonderful news and keeping it all crossed for you both - Keep us up to date but Manuka honey is incredible isn't it - GOOD LUCK xxx

He's just so bloody welsh! :D

Pleased to see it sorted itself eventually.

He definitely is that! I love him and hate him at the same time, if thats possible.. he has always been funny to come near people during the day but evening or morning he'll gallop over. Your never 'catch' him as well, he either comes to call or you won't get anywhere near him. LOL - 'Special' boy
