Some horses just don't get fun?

Just wondering if some don't understand the "fun parts" of riding. Good old Arab mare doesn't seem to get any excitement out of happy hacking, water on farm rides and even doing some Trec. She has no interest in it and the only time during the Trec she gOt excited was when we had to jump a bank. Shes not scared of water, but we have a river on our Farm Ride and she will just stand in it, never attempted to play with the water. Then take her in a jumping ring or showing ring and she's nearly peeing herself with excitement! Are some horses just all work and no play?

Maybe it depends on your definition of 'play'. Isn't it the same for people- what's good for one is no fun at all for the other?

Yeah, I know. Weve got the other two who will murder the water underneath them. Drink it, kick it at people etc but Arab just stands there...looking bored. Her definition of fun is competing and jumping. Two things I'm not that fussed about :)

I think you have just have find what your horse wants to do. I bought a mare with a good show jumping history to event, she just didn't want to party by herself although she was more than capable. In an effort to 'wake her up' someone suggested taking her hunting, she was born to do this! Always forward going, never too strong and will jump anything put in front of her. She has spent the last three seasons hunting, whilst I may get the odd show jumping round out of her I have learnt not to persist and not to ask in the summer (definitely a winter horse).

I am lucky that I could do this for her, but I have bought a youngster to show jump as I still want to compete and this takes the pressure off her.
