I don’t think I’ve ever posted here before but I look after 3 Labradors and am in need of some advice. Last time I looked after them the male dog became very constipated, so much so I had to take him quite urgently to the vet. In true Labrador style when he finally went I found strips of what looked like material in his poo so I took all his material toys away so it didn’t happen again. All fine until today and I’ve had a message from his owner to say he ate a baby rabbit whole this morning on a walk and he’s worried about him. I’m looking after them over the weekend and I’m hoping all will have passed through him by them but does anyone know what effect fresh wildlife has on a dogs stomach. Is he likely to struggle to pass skin and bone or will it be digested?

I have a theory that labs evolved to eat the stuff that things like hyenas and Tasmanian devils won’t.

They have certainly opened my eyes as to just how dustbin like they are. His mother wolfed down a rancid rabbit, it immediately came back up again and I managed to stand on it before she could grab it again. My boots stank. A few days later his sister pulled me over chasing a squirrel which she saw and I didn’t. She caught it and then ran around with it in her mouth shaking it violently until it died. Not a chance of getting it off her but at least she dropped it once deceased.

There’s a reason I have house cats 🤣

Thank you to everyone who has replied, I am very much assured he won’t suffer whatsoever. Apparently he has eaten rabbits before but given his recent issues his owner was a little concerned as he had just left for New York for 3 weeks and being 5 hours behind when Wilf was rather poorly I don’t think he wants a repeat scenario.

My two have eaten so many rabbits recently. Its grim. Ava cat used to bring them over the wall into the garden and literally present them to a dog, like a gift. They generally had wolfed them down before I'd got to them 🤢

That's something I won't miss about her, the dead creatures being brought home.

Our terriers love a dead rabbit head, with no ill effects (which they find with surprising regularity)
eww! That reminds me a few weeks ago i removed something from Spuds mouth out walking and it was the slimiest mankiest rabbit head which turned into a game of fetch because the horrible thing was so slimy i couldn't chuck it over the hedge  They all thought i was playing grab the head.....
