Just read this on BD forum and I thought it was so beautiful I would forward it.

Pinched from another forum but lovely words!!

1. My life is likely to last 20 or more years, any separation from you will be painful for me (remember this before you take me home)

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well being.

4. Don't be angry with me for long. Don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. (I only have you..)

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when it is speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Remember before you hit me that I am powerful enough to hurt you, (but choose not to.)

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. (perhaps i have a problem that you might not be aware of.)

9. Take care of me when I am old. (you too will be old one day.)

10. Go with me on the last journey. Never say 'I cant bear to watch' or 'let it happen in my absence' Everything is easier for me if you are there.....

A few people on youtube have made lovely videos to this.

I don't like number 10 at all though I think that one is a bit harsh.

Yes- my horse had no idea he was about to be shot. I did, and I couldn't have been there. How much more worrying would it have been for him to see his owner sobbing hysterically, rather than someone else (who knew him) stuffing him with polos and making sure it was all ok.

I agree. Its made me feel so guilty all afternoon. Hadnt really thought about it til now, but sometimes you dont have a choice to whether you are there at the end, I know I didnt with Benson.

Don't feel guilty! I did when I first saw this and honestly once your horse is so far gone they don't even realise your there anyway, I kno wmy Koko didn't his mind was gone.

Its better that someone calm and emotionally detached was there to calm your horse, if your there crying your eyes out your horse will know somethings up. Just think about how much of a good life you gave your horse and even in death you did what was best for him :)

Beautiful :) made me teary! :o

Horses (well animals in general) are often so loving, honest, loyal and forgiving.(often if they are not, it's because of hurt caused by humans!) Yet they never have a say in how their lives are spent. Cherish them dearly. :)

Absolutely agree with this. .. I wasnt there when Holly died as I was at work and she had broken her leg in the field. She had her injection and I saw her afterwards. Will want to be there when the time comes for my current 2. As said, I cherish them dearly.......
