Some opinions please...

This is the one my trimmer was talking about noodle there's a link on their web site to the trail results.

I'm very sceptical about supplements for ulcers but this stuff comes with recommendation from Dr Kerry Ridgway (among others) and with matters regarding ulcers - I trust his judgement completely.

He trialled it before the University of Michigan (?) did and he found it successful on all but three horses for gastric AND chronic hind gut ulcers (I believe the three horses that 'failed' had owners that didn't complete the course).

What a horrible situations. :(

How about sending her to a stud for a year? There maybe somewhere that would take her and let her run with the mares, even if she's not in foal? Outside lifestyle in a setttled herd of mares is about as low stress as you can get.

thanks all for the help :)

That retirement place looks wonderful... its about an hour from us but id feel happy with her there as it looks lovely :)

will give them a call i think.

will ppm those in my area and give you details

thanks :)

i have emailed the retirement place -

am viewing some grass livery places tomorow but im quite keen to try retirement as i know i dont have to go down daily to make sure shes okay

Im going to see if theres anything a tiny bit nearer, but the place on 60 acres would be amazing for her
for £120 i think thats brilliant :)

Go in with your eyes open and ask lots of questions it looks fab .i hope it's as perfect as it looks .

i will do :)

ive never left my horse in 2 years even for 1 night ive always gone down. so whichever route i choose its going to be a shock to the system so im not rushing it - making sure its right :)

theres another a little more locally ive emailed - this one is £50 a week but onyl 30 mins away

least i think i have options now- mabey not as cheap as i thougth but i can do more hours at work knowing shes okay to pay for her lol!! :D :)

Omeprazole is the active ingredient in GG, so if that isn't working then perhaps she also has unresolved hind gut ulcers? In which case the supplement that Oberon linked to may be of some benefit.

Ulcers can also be caused by bacterial infection, and require anti Bs as treatment. I assume your vet has considered this, though.

Good luck, hopefully a more natural lifestyle will make her more comfortable :).

Retirement place was going to be my suggestion as well.

Good luck! and let us know what you decide x

I have no experience of equine ulcers, but i DO have them myself :(
I keep being treated for them (40mg omaprazole a day). It helps, but doesn't work longterm. So i then get re-tested (i don't know why cos they know Im always positive) for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Once confirmed, Im started on the 'triple therapy' ( http://www.nhstaysideadtc.scot.nhs.uk/TAPG html/Section 1/1 guidehelicobacter.htm point 8) This is an excellent long-lasting treatment (a cure for most people ; Im unlucky :( )
You can be tested for h.pylori via gastroscopy or feacal sample.

Now then, i have NO idea about horses - i know they're very different to us - but i agree with the above poster who mentioned antibiotics. Worth a look in to imo. Good luck though - i feel your girls pain...literally! xx

thanks all :)

itsonlyme - the vet said she wouldnt need supplements anymore which i thought was strange as i know she is "prone" now to ulcers.

Im not riding her and just resting her until i decide what to do.

i have viewed a couple of fields already but most are barbed wire and sheep netting!? am i being so unrealistic to ask for post and rail!? or electric fencing? :( brilliant fields...bad fencing.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so many problems with your horse - chronic illness in a much loved pet is so distressing.

I am not in any way a vet or even know that much about horse health, but I did a quite whizz through the medical/vetinary research databases that I have access to.

There has been some work on looking at links between Helicobacter bacteria species and ulcers in horses, but nothing conclusive. But certainly if a bacterial infection is the main cause of ulcers in other species then it may be worth discussing with your Vet whether a trial of a broad spectrum equine antibiotic might be appropriate. A vet worth their salt will do the research for you - mine has access to vetinary research databases and vetinary forums and often does research on the animals I have.

Also be wary of vitamin and mineral or herb supplements. My dietary experience is people and small herbivores, but high doses of some vitamins can certainly cause gastric side effects.

I know you said you're not loaning her out, but could you not "lend" (horrible word for an animal, I know but haven't got another on hand) to someone who needs a companion to live out? That way she is getting time out and she gets checked if it is too far for you to get to everyday.
Whereabouts in cheshire are you?

thanks paulag - my vets have been good in suggesting supplement to us but my vet put it down to management which i do agree with - shes stressy in a stable and wants out :)

heatherann- apprecaite the thought, but no....i find it very difficult to trust people as it is, i couldnt give my girl to anyone else- my lovely dad actually said his friend is wanting a companion for his horse..........in scotland!!! i politely declined as i would miss her terribly

i do believe in my saying of "my horse my problem"...if i cant deal with her then i have to consider pts, as i wont pass my problem on - especially with the horror stories of dealers etc

Im waiting on a couple of calls from fields/yards(with 24hour grazing) but most are around 45 mins one way. honestly....im prepared to travel once a day to see her/make sure shes ok. i owe her a chance just to be a horse.
