A friend of mine has a really beautiful coloured mare on loan, who i think with a bit of work would be a cracking riding club horse or WHP, the mare is about 5/6
I've been fortunate enough to know this mare since she was 2 and know shes not had her teeth done and her saddle doesn't fit brilliantly.
The mare as a result, has been to know to headshake for said friend, although she has never headshaked when i used to ride her at 4/5 although her saddle did fit back then.
My said friend has now said she wants to put a standing martingale on and change her full cheek jointed snaffle into a dutch gag on the bottom ring. (not sure how that would work tbh)
I Have suggested that she gets her teeth done and her back/saddle rechecked as there is something blatently wrong with her poor poor mare, my friend then snapped at me and said to mind my own business and let her get on with it.
The mares owner doesn't really care at all, he bought the pony for some reason....and chucked it in a field.
Shes very talented little mare and i hate to see her get abused....probably not the best word but too angry to think of anything else.
Is there anything I could do to help this poor mare? not short of getting the dentist out and then make her pay for the bill.

Does the owner ever visit it? If so, could you make the suggestion to him about the dentist or saddle..

Or better yet do your horses need their teeth doing anytime soon, if they do, let your friend know and maybe they can have a little look for her just in case her mare needs anything doing...

All out of sugggestions now....!!
 
my horse is due in august, but i could probably arrange to have the dentist come to say hello for a visit...
thats a rather good suggestion and the owner has been to see her once in 6 months, pony got a pat and he was off again....just feel sorry for the little mare.
 
knowing who the owner is myself, i know he never visits, he's one of those people who just cares about the money, as long as the mare stays on the yard and she pays him he doesn't care.... i feel sorry for her too
 
You have given her your opinion... which she did not thank you for. However, she will go away and think on! You will have sown the seeds of thought in her mind.

Headshaking can be cause by many things. Not simply a lack of dentistry.

Play the long game. Wait a few weeks. The new tack will not help, and by then she will have realised this. Then book a dentist to visit your yard. Leave a note saying a dentist is visiting, and if anyone else wants their horse doing, add their name to the list. Then wait a bit and do similar for a saddle fitter. She might just go for it if other people are. There is nothing like peer pressure.

Yup - that's what you need to do.

I'm not convinced that headshaking is caused by lack of dentistry or badly fitting tack. Could the mare have developed headshaking since you rode her? If so it's down to the current rider to try to sort it out - not you.

You can't be responsible for other people's animals. Only for your own. So make sure that yours are so fabulous that other people want to know how you do it..............
 
am trying, its just incredibly frustrating, as you probably know yourself.
i'm a bit of an animal saver and try to help every animal and obviously i can't.
Just would have thought, as said friend is on the same college course as me, should have known better...but i tried, thats all i can do.
I wasn't nasty, just trying to be helpful, but sometimes you can only try so much.
And right now my horse is pretty fabulous, even though he does put buckets on his head

lol, you can't really do much with your lame horse ether, he is more stiff than lame htough....
and moulting and getting fluff everywhere =p

He's special BECAUSE he puts buckets on his head in my book!!!!!

You can't save them all - and it's sad, but just be the best you can be for the animals that you have, and you'll do the world a favour.

my animals are mainly rescues and now all happy...and fat...well not fat...fatter should be the word

We had a coloured pony at my old yard who used to headshake. It was because she was ridden by numpties who thought that riding on a contact was 'cruel'...

She never did it with me, as I changed her bit from a 3 ring gag on the bottom ring to an Myler snaffle and actually rode her up to an even contact instead of letting her pootle round with reins in loops and her head in the air.
A stronger bit is NOT the way to go! If she is made uncomfortable by being jabbed in the mouth with a stronger bit it will only make the head shaking worse. Better to make sure that the bit she is currently in actually fits her properly and is not nipping/rubbing anywhere and suits her mouth conformation. Dentistry and a check of saddle fitting won't do any harm, and perhaps your friend would benefit from some lessons as well...

For one i have never mentioned anything about putting a dutch gag on her nor anything about a standing martingale. all i have sugessted is going to a bitles bridle.

Yes i knw her saddle isnt the best of fit but i can afford anything else atm.
I did call the dentist but he never got back to me so i am trying again.

I would of thought u would of shown me some gratitude as i let you ride her at the last show, that u were suposse to have taken your own horse to except he was lame. and before you unfairly criticise someone for not looking after there own horse properly maybe u should look to your own horse and the long over due farrier vist that is required.

Not once have i snapped at you, i seem to recall u snappin at me a number of times for various things.
 
i didnt want this to go in to a full grown moan but i was trying to set a few things straight here. with her syaing im doing stuff when i havnt.

and tbh..riding at the show was for your benefit as well so you can see how she goes and as you can see she went rather well didn't she?
And her saddle doesn't fit at all, you know it doesn't and i was just trying to get opinions tbh and try to help you. I do feel sorry for rainbow and for you because i know you don't have a lot of money, like i do. But i don't think changing her bit would help untill her teeth are done.

Now discussion over untill i see you at college...which i presume will be on friday?
or probably not....
