well my day was fun at new yard turned up at 3 ish was sorting out stable when i herd some one holding their horn on car for ages then a massive bang all the horses in field went mad nearly running through fences all calmed down so carried on then got the gg's in tied mine up out side stable was a couple others there by now then bang and i mean bang its was so loud a pony panicked but did not break free mine pulled straight off and off he went flat out up drive. that horrible gut wrenching feeling came over me but luckily he stopped and came back very good pony. i was so angry not at him he just got a big cuddle but any way it turns out it was some one shooting with god only No's what gun a bloody cannon by the sounds of it just behind stables just other side of horses fence how stupid if any one was riding in school or out hacking, a child nearly got trampled could have been really bad the bloke has horses to that's the sickener just don't think i wanted to throttle him not what i need my horse to be doing galloping up a drive way SO angry
 
We have similar problems at my yard (also East Anglia), pheasant shooting in the winter, pigeons the rest of the year and bird scarers just in case it's all a bit quiet! You'd think the horses would get used to it all, but they haven't yet!
 
We have problems with people shooting in neighbouring fields too!!! VERY annoying!! we noticed the horses going particularly mad one day as we came home so i went up to check and there was someone shooting rabbits in OUR field with 4 horses! Including a heavily pregnant mare.. It was so infuriating and he had the cheek to tell us he was "entitled" to be there!!! GAHH!!!!
 
Yep, been there too. Last autumn they set up their hide in the hedge right next to our neds, and as the field is less than 3/4 acre, my old girl who terrified of anything that goes bang, was cowering in the corner the further away she could get. They must have seen the distress they were causing. On a previous occasion the shot was coming down all over the place and I got hit in the back of the neck - could have been my eye! Last year one of the livery horses was found to have been hit by a pellet under her tail. Stupid morons.

I've had the opposite problem - at my old yard there were some chaps who started shooting rabbits in my horse's field. My horse found it fascinating and wouldn't leave them alone! I was worried he'd end up being shot! (The guys were great about it though, needn't have worried.) TBs are odd... He also loves helicopters. Nearly had a breakdown when I picked up the base of a kettle, though. Strange, strange animal.
 
we had people shooting rabbits in our fields few years back they had really quiet guns, they didn't do it in the fields the horses were in so were unaffected
 
I guess I'm really lucky then, because on the estate where my gang are kept there is a really well organised and well run official shoot, which goes out twice a week in season. They are brilliant and don't shoot near/towards my horses fields at all. However the horses still hear regular bangs. My gang are now completely immune to gunfire, and it doesn't startle them. I did an endurance ride last year where we had to pass a military training area - and my boy didn't even blink at the gunfire. So, in my case, because the shoot is sensible and well organised - I actually see it as an asset!
 
I'm same as you Faro, our stables in part of the estate so shooting is pretty much a daily thing. It's crows at the moment that are getting it, and clay pigeons..but they don't mind so much!!! Some people arrive and stress that their horses will never cope...guaranteed 2 days later horse is snoozing while WW3 is going on behind their stables!!! Part and parcel of country life!!:D
 
i hack past gas bird scare rs and no prob and normal gun fire he has no problem with ride past shooters no hassle this was ridiculous tho i never herd a gun like it when i say it was loud it was b****y loud
