Some people should be shot!!

I am just a little savage at the moment,
My OH has greyhounds, he has a dog in training at the moment who is lame. But the awful part of this story is:

He had a little bitch who was no longer racing, so he advertised her as to a "good home only" she raced her last race, and WON, and then was picked up by this chap, who promised her "a home for life" on his sofa with his lurchers. It sounded great and off she went.

They have texted and all was fine. Then last sunday we text him, and she said "she's fine"
On Friday night we had a call to say she had been found "tied to a gate", and was now in RSPCA care!!

The day he had told us she was fine, was the very same day she was found!! rotten bastard. He reckons now that he had rehomed her, and knows nothing about it!!

We have phoned about the dear little soul, and are told she is fine, but can't be released because she is now part of an investigation!!

What the hell are you supposed to do with a dog when it finishes racing???? The rescue centres are full, and if you find it a private home, they risk ending up cruelty cases. Is it the kindest thing to have them put to sleep??

its a very sad state of affairs.

Meant to say, she couldn't have come to us, we have 2 terriers that are quite mean and it would have been a recipe for disaster, also i am not able to have any more dogs in this house. We are looking to move somewhere else, so wouldn't have this problem again!!

Im sorry i cant help you, ive never rehomed a dog before.

Just think that this is a terrible story, people can give you a false feeling of security. I worked in a rehoming centre and they would vet the dogs new home and give regular visits afterwards.

The likes of dog trust give you the options of keeping the dog at home and placing it on its books. If someone comes looking for that breed then they mention your dog. They personally go and vet the house and do the call outs. Would also mean that you have a back up if the same happened again.

Firstly....he should take measures to neuter her...it is his responsibility to see to it...that upon re-homing...she cannot be used as a breeding machine.
Secondly....Im afraid the dog should have remained in his care until a competent home could be found....some rescue centers activley seek a home whilst the dog stays in its present environment i.e with your partner(due to lack of space...its takes time....but this is part and parcel of being a responsible owner...this way the dogs homes are checked and re-homing contracts signed.

Maybe he should limit his numbers to allow for retired greyhounds...to be just that ...RETIRED and not passed on.
After all he has used the dog to his pleasure...surely he could return the favour.

I fully understand all that you are saying, and agree also.

The home he found for the little girl seemed to be wonderful, she was going to live with this man, who has his lurchers, who live in the house with him and have the best of everything.

What went wrong we don't know as he will now not reply to our texts or answer our calls. If he had phoned us and told us there was a problem we would have sorted the situation out.

We found what we thought was a wonderful home for her.
He actually only had her and the dog. He had lost his job, moved counties and had nowhere to put her, so did what he thought was right. We never thought it would end like this.
The dog was also advertised, but will be staying where he is now

you beat me to it Cala ....the greyhound racing industry needs to really get it's house in order and take FULL responsibility for every dog they breed ....whether they win or not !!!! - I could rant on for hours about this ...but I won't .....suffice to say that the fallout from this sport is the greatest scandal within the dog world today.

I am sorry if this is upsetting anyone, it wasn't meant to.
I know it hits a lot of nerves with people, i worked in coursing kennels several years ago, and know that feelings run high.

He thought it was best for this little girl to find a nice home and be a "dog" for the rest of her years. We weren't to know that the guy who promised to cherish her, would turn out to be a lying scumbag

I have rescued retired Greyhounds through Greyhound Gap please try them they will take in retired hounds,they are fab people and all dogs get excellent homes and are homechecked befroe they can go.

I have to say I agree with you their entirely CALA. I have two rescue greys and both were abandoned by their 'caring owners' by simply being passed on when surplus to requirements.

A dog is for life not just for racing.

Sorry, very strong opinions on the passing round of unwanted dogs

I agree with another poster, maybe trainers should be made to care for their own retired greyhounds from the profit they make. This would make it less profitable but make the owners/trainers more responsible.
