....and certainly shouldnt be allowed to compete them

i was at a big show yesterday, and the first class i watched was an in hand Part Bred Heavy Horse class. among the entrants was a big shire X (looked nearly full shire to me) who was 4 years old. in the ring, this horse became quite fractious; there was a lot of loud music and people waving banners over the edge of the viewing gallery. in the trot up, the horse 'disgraced' himself by breaking into a canter and spooking at the flower arrangements. needless to say, he went quickly down in the judge's favour, and was placed last in the class.
i went outside to take a phone call, just as the lap of honour finished and the horses came out. the girl leading the horse brought him straight out, took a schooling whip and proceeded to whip him across the flank and shoulder, shouting 'I'll teach you to f*****g canter in the ring, you f*****r...' and other pleasantries. jeez, these people dont deserve horses; he was a youngster, probably competing in his first championship show, and he hadnt really done anything wrong. the ex racers who were next in the ring behaved far, far worse; it was more like synchronised pirouetting as they shied at the flowers and crowds, but their handlers were happy to soothe and calm them.

why have a horse if you want it to behave like a robot? i'm all for discipline when there is blatant bad behaviour, but this girl achieved nothing in her actions yesterday.

Yes I would have taken the whip off her and fu**ing well hit her with it the b***h! No need for that and one of the reasons I don't frequent such places with my ponio!

pottamus - believe me, i wish i had now.

i was there as a commentator yesterday, and dithered for a moment wondering whether it was appropriate to step in and say something. its tricky...you risk all sorts of backlash by muscling in on situations like that, even if you are in the right and they are very much in the wrong.

Very wrong he must have been very confused being hit so long after the so called "very bad behaviour" as well. like oc says it wont help following shows. And not to mention poor horsey

Bad horsemanship, bad showmanship, bad loser.

Gah!

Sounds to me like someone was embarrassed. A young horse breaks pace, it happens, ignore it and get on with the class, more training at home would maybe help that I imagine. They are horses, not machines at the end of the day.

Was there anything in the rules of the show mentioning mis-use of the whip?
If there was then I think you would have been within your rights as an Official to have said something publicly. I do hope someone said something even if it was only "Oi! That's not on!" Mind, I did that once and almost got beaten up, does put you off being virtuous

I used to be Secretary of a little Pony Club in Wales and we had a brilliant Commentator, some thought she was a bit too outspoken, but she didn't give a monkeys, if she saw what she considered abuse, or heard bad language she would say so right over the tannoy, stating competitor number and all. No doubt we may have lost competitors once in a while but they certainly never dared to mistreat the horse on our grounds again. Can't stop them beating the living daylights out of the poor blighter behind closed doors though.

Thats shameful. If she like that in public I dread to think how the poor thing is treated at home. Heavy horses are so gentle and with an animal that size she should lookout as one day its good nature may take a turn. Can you PM me the show too? thanks.
