I'm not a huge fan of people taking their dogs out with them on horseback, however I'm not that fussed about it...

What I do have a HUGE problem with is people taking their dog out on a hack with them, and not giving a STUFF when said dog gets left behind and ends up following the wrong group of riders.

Our lanes "should" be quiet, in reality they are pretty busy, they are also completely blind, high hedges and tight corners, but some people think it is perfectly acceptable not only to ride 3 abreast and pass other horses at trot (when they have stopped to let you pass as it is clear one is getting worked up by having strange horse up it's backside), but also to leave their lovely little terrier to it's own devices, and not notice that it has completely disappered.

I was hoping it would follow us right back to the yard, in which case I would have taken it to the pound and let them pay to get the ruddy thing back, but it realised where it was by then and buggered off up the main road to it's home.

Hope it got back Ok

I couldn't go and check as I have no car.
I also hope it went in their house and rolled everywhere, as it had found the 5 week old dead badger and had a lovely roll

To be fair, it was VERY well behaved, had a lot of road and horse sense, hardly surprising if it has to do that everyday!!

thats bad,
I went on a hack last year and someone had just let their dogs out of the house round the farm land around it,
Only the rottie doesn't like horses (this was a bridleway btw) so we ended up on the path with a snarling rottie blocking the way!!!!! the terrier with it was just running round like a nutter, but the rottie was slightly less than appealing, and the owners were not even looking out of the house to keep an eye on the dogs! so we had to dismount, walk to the house to get the owners, then they went "O they're harmless" (rottie still snarling at horses!)

Where I used to keep my horse there was a blook who use to drive to the top of the lane, let his dog out then follow it back down the lane in his car!! The dog had already killed one dog!!

Bloody thing

I worry as my horse is not a huge fan of dogs, he is also rather large, and even a gentle kick from him could kill a dog.

Gargh thats dreadful!!!

Ye the horse I was on was terrified of dogs as she got chased by a rottie when she was younger (so this being a rottie was like GREAT!!!!)

My friend used to drive along a country lane with his greyhound running along side, but that was so it could do sprints and do the whole natural behaviour bit...but that was only short bursts, and it was a big puff of a dog!

Cant believe some people's approaches to exercising their dogs, especially in some situations!

I do despair of people sometimes. Yes, a dog can be trained to have tremendous road sense, but it seems awfully risky leave it to its own devices on the road like that.

I live in an extemely busy part of the city, and came across a zooming 3lb Yorkie the other day, owner nowhere in sight. The owner eventually called out when the dog was a whole block ahead of her. Sure, the dog may stick to the pavement when it's being walked off its leash, but what about all the delivery bikes, couriers, and cars going in and out of garages.
