All the labs!

Some of the puppy (by Beau above!) in the ring. She didnt get anything as she is very immature compared to the others, and rather overwhelmed by the noisy hall, but she showed well and enjoyed it!

Oh, Ruby is dead :( My poor Wooby :(

Not heard anything from Herbies new owners for a while, annoyed as they were supposed to keep in touch!!

Lovely pics :)

Must be no atmosphere in your ring without all the shouting going on :p

Re the double handling mentioned on the other thread, where do you stand on dogs being fed tit-bits in the ring (obviously a dog will stand and look more alert if someone had food or the promise of food in their hand) and stood on boxes (does this still happen with Yorkies?) I wasn't there obviously and don't know how bad it was, but how do you think calling a dog's name or whatever to get a dog to prick his ears and show himself better, compare to that sort of thing?
If it was all out horn-blowing and mad running outside the ring, I will shut up :p

Jasmine - i know!!! Its crazy!! We will catch up one day lol!!

As for double handling etc etc. I dont know exactly what the purpose of the boxes are for yorkies but i cant see what that has to do with anything? Its nothing like double handling and doesnt affect other dogs nor give the dog or handler any kind of unfair advantage that i can see. Bait is only fed by the handler in the ring, i've never seen someone outside the ring feeding bait to a dog to get its attention or make it stand. The handler can do what they want (within reason so as not to disrupt other dogs) to show their dog off to their best advantage. The dog i mentioned was paying no attention to its handler other than standing to have its feet placed and trotting around the ring with him. The whole time it was being attracted by a second handler outside the ring. I dont agree with that at all, if the handler cant show their dog themselves then they shouldnt be handling it IMO.

It is a stunning dog and well deserved its BIS, but for dogs like GSDs that can be trained to do such advanced things, why on earth is it necessary to double handle?? Surely they can be trained to be that attentive to their own handler? It is very distracting to other dogs who arent used to such things going on around them.

The use of boxes, food as an example is that different breeds are shown different ways :) judged for different things.

I wouldn't say that outside attraction gives an unfair advantage per se, but I do see why excessive outside attraction it can put other dogs off and that is obviously not on.

Owner-handlers in the GSD world are quite rare. Or even if they are owner-handled, one half of the partnership, say, spouse, child etc will be on the outside of the ring to alert whether that be calling a name, throwing a ball etc.

That is not to say handlers stand there and hold the lead and do nothing, far from it, a talented GSD handler is worth their weight in gold (or cash mostly :p I work for wine :p)
and can make or break a certain type of dog - but at the end of the day, it's about the dog in structure, movement, character, GSDs love stimulation and get so easily bored, I'd rather see a dog going round with his ears up because his owner is calling him than trundling round looking like he'd rather be somewhere else.

A lot of handlers at our show a few months ago had never met their charges before that day and there were no issues. In fact my 'adopted' dog was almost kidnapped by his handler, he totally fell for him :p

FI, Elmo is from Germany. The way they do things there, the way that dog is used to being shown, is on big footie field, athletics pitches, he's been shown at the World Sieger, which takes place in a stadium, the atmosphere is electric and being alerted is the way he will be used to being shown.
Not wrong IMO, just different!

But I do appreciate your points :)

Well, thatss all very well for a breed show if the organiserss and other exhibitors are happy for it to happen, but in UK shows double handling is against the rules - they are not allowed to do it!! If you're showing over here from overseas thats great, but you must abide by our rules just as we must abide by theirs when we show over there.

If the dog is so attentive to its owner outside the ring it stands to reason it would show better with its owner handling it :) The handler was ok but didnt look like a professional to me - ripped jeans, t-shirt and stacked and moved the dog as well as the others but no better. The dog went well, but was clearly very distracted and not at all happy in the ring, the handler even said so himself, he said something along the lines of "he is going *****, really flat and lazy". He didnt appear to be anything special and didnt have the look of a professional handler, maybe the owner should have a go handling him!

Other dogs and people found it very distracting, why on earth would anyone risk having (in this case) a BIS award taken off them should one of the other handlers or spectators put in a complaint?? It seems madness!! And i believe thats what would happen if the complaint was upheld. Thankfully im not aware of anyone who did (though i only spoke to those sat immediately by me) as i'd hate to see such a beautiful dog stripped of his award, but the owners are stupid to risk it IMO.

Love all the pics of your dogs caravanning. When do you get the new little chi?
Just to add my tuppenny worth re the double handling, I do agree maybe not the most sensible in the BIS ring, but as the owner or whoever is attracting is on the outside of the ring can't really see that it should be distracting to others dogs in the ring. Although you are correct to say double handling is against the rules in the UK in reality KC reps do seem to turn a blind eye at breed shows, they seem to take the view that as long as it is done in moderation and no one complains then it is acceptable.

ETS. Not that you ever get a big chi!

The problem is that the person outside the ring was walking/running up and down the ringside and to have someone constantly doing that, especially wearing a flourescent outfit (yes, really!!) is very distracting to the handlers, never mind the other dogs!

The fact that it is breaking the rules is one thing, but it is very bad sportsmanship too IMO. But hey ho! lol!

The new chi comes over the end sept :D
