Some Qs about selling horses

It looks as though OH and I are definitely moving to Canada in October 2011 :D

It will certainly be an exciting move, but we seriously need to save some £££ in the interim!!
...and sadly I think this means I need to advertise my hoss :o :(

Please can you kindly people answer a few quick questions for me??

1. What would you expect a just-turned-5yr old (broken April this year) to be able to do?
(eg. walk, trot, canter, hack in company, hack alone, XC, SJ etc?)

2. *whispers* What is he worth?
2b. What would increase his value :p :D

3. How particular can I be with potential buyers? He is my baby afterall :o

I'd expect it to lunge, hack in company (behind and in front..) . Walk and trot in school - 20m circles. Canter on long side (or whole school if smaller horse..) Trotting poles and basic jump... Have been clipped and trimmed, and learnt manners. Price totally depends on sort. Best to look for similar ads and work out the price...
 
To increase value, have him looking great - trimmed mane and tail, well shod etc. To really increase value you need time, which you ain't got really.. You can be as particular as you like, but at the end of the day you are selling him, and cutting the strings.. Its also a buyer's market, and the second half of the summer, so I'd suggest get hin on the market ASAP or prices will drop at the end of the summer... good luck.x
 
Oh no Cliqmo, wish I could afford him, but have 3 already.
He is a seriously nice looking horse that could probably do a variety of equestrian pursuits.
At 5 broken a few months ago I would be hoping for 3 fairly nice paces, nothing to flash he's still on a big learning curve, but responsive when aids given, I would probably have started a bit of pole work just to add a bit of fun and variety to the education, hacking out in company definately, on own not to bothered at this stage, but would be working towards it if it hadn't already happened. Each horse is different, every youngster I've worked with has progressed at a different rate, some really quickly some take their time, my 5 year old came out of racing a year and a bit ago and because of her past traumas is only now just at the leading out on her own stage, I would guess at at least another 6 months before I even think about getting on her.
I would be willing to pay (if I could afford it) quite a bit for your horse providing the usual 5*vetting was ok - although I'm flexible on vettings to a degree. Best way to gauge a price is look at similar ads. Increase his value, get him out doing some local comps, more schooling/education all the normal things really with a youngster.
I've never sold a horse, all my own have been 'lifers' so if I did have to sell one I'd probably put potential owners through an interrogation, if that didn't put them of then I'd probably be ok with selling to them.
If in the mean time I win the lottery, can I have 1st bags on him, he is LOVERLY :D
 
Thanks for your replies!! I'm delighted to report that I've managed to tick off all the things you guys think he should have done :D He is happily hacking alone and he's attended a few shows (competed at one) but we've not yet done pole work- so that'll be something to work on in the next few weeks :D

Price-wise people seem to be advertising at circa £2k for 'just backed with great potential' heinz 57 types or £10k for the same horse that has posh breedlines :confused: Bentley doesn't have any papers but has had really great reviews from show judges and has such a superb workman-like attitude I really think he could do well in any sphere (that is such a horrid cliche :o ) but particularly in the showing arena or out on the hunting field. With this in mind can anyone shed any light at what level I should be advertising him?? :D

I'd take him out hunting for maybe half this season if you can keep him till then and get him seen out and about with your hunt :) For a nice big fella like him....if he keeps his workman attitude and shows potential with his jumping out in the field, I'd say the hunt themselves would possibly be very interested in him plus would push his price up too :)

If you wanted to take him down that route :)
 
My 15hh Sports Horse Mare is for sale, broken earlier this year.

She w, t, c around the school in an outline, with prelim school movements (although will lengthen and shorten her trot as she has an exceptional pace) Started basic lateral work. Has started pole work and small jumps. Has jumped on the lunge and is very scopey.

She hacks out alone and in company and in traffic.

She has amazing uphill floaty paces, good breeding, very pretty.

We put her up at the weekend for £4000 if that helps. She's on selling livery I'm not sure what interest she's had yet.


(I hope this didn't sound like advertising by the way! Was just trying to give OP a similar comparison)
 
I was thinking the same as Binky. He looks like an excellent weight carrier and if he has a decent jump and good manners I would think he may make an excellent huntsman or whips horse - why not send an email around to a number of hunts to see if they are interested - though maybe at least take him on hound exercise first! Hunts often wont tke on a 4yo ut could be very interested in a 5yo. Otherwise i think he could still be a good man's hunter (what height is he?) - and many people pay about £5k for that type - and often a lot more! Best get his jumping started as I think that will open up the right options for him. ;)
