Some urgent advice needed pease regarding Passports

Thank you everyone!!

ok well Ive just spoken to the transport man, who is my friend, and he put me onto his wife, who does a lot of showing and imports, breeds etc.

Anyway, she said the liklihood is that the horse doesnt have a passport.
she said what you guys said, get his competition name, or passport number, and ring passport people or BSJA to confirm he actually has one.

she did say however that they probably wont be able to confirm if the change of ownership has gone through.
She said if the horse doesnt have apssport then that isnt a big problem, its if the horse isnt who he is claimed to be.

The fact he offered me a passport of another horse who is SO similar suggests to my friends wife that the vet may not have even vetted MY horse, as they arent supposed to do a vetting without the passport!

The thing is when he offered to pay for the ownership change I actually said well I want the passport to send off, and they have apparantly sent it off anyway.

No my problem is what Im paying for a horse with another hores credentials!

OMG what a mess! My friend said dont bring the horse home until I have its passport, i agree, what if My horse turned out to be 19 or something because it had been vetted on this other horses passport.

The possibilities are endless.
I would rather lose the horse than my money!

ok so what is my next step?

Contact owner and ask for his comp name, see if I can find out if transfer has been done?

If I cant find that out, dont bring him hone until passport arrives?

OMG I dont believe this, just my luck LOL

Thank you watcher!

God what a disaster.

Didn't you get your own vet to vet the horse?????

And the phrase I'll take it - but for £1500 springs to mind.

No because it was too far away, got a local one, not his vet, but for all know now he could have seen this other 'similar' horses passport!

[/ QUOTE ]
Oh ok, thought it was his vet.

Oh dear don't know what to say, other than if the vet gave a full bill of health, well that's something.

speak to the vet, you may be getting yourself all wound up over nothing they could have genuinely sent off the passport (dont know why they would do that )

arrgh need to smile or I wil cry!

ok owners phone has no signal, bad in that area, so have text him asking for horses passport number and BSJA name so I can find out if he ACTUALLY has a passport and also hopefully if the change of ownership has been made.

Ive also said if I cant find that out then Im not prepared to pay for him or bring him home until his passport arrives.

Would you say that is the right thing to do?

Would seem to be the most sensible (if heartbreaking) thing to do.

I'll be thinking of you over the weekend, so please post the outcome as I won't be near a computer over the weekend.

However, you've never said what this horse is called - a quick google search of his name would come up with some info surely???

ah ok I didnt know you could get copies.

OMG why couldnt it just be straightforward, well like I said I would rather lose the horse than potentially my money.

Learned too much the hard way to be bowled over by a list of credentials and a pretty face!

Well Ive asked for his BSJA name /passport number, so when he sends them (if he is legit) then I will contact the issuer and see what I can find out. However Im still thinking I shouldnt part with a penny until his passport is in my sweaty mitts!

I think you have to calm down and think about what your guts are telling you, You have said that this horse has BSJA winnings etc you have tried him out a few times , the vet passed him. Your first port of call is to speak to the vet (you have just paid him alot of money so get him to do his job properly) tell him what has happened and ask his opinion on the owners and the horse etc, ask him if he was shown the passport and that he thoroughly checked it out etc. I think that you are in danger of upsetting these people if they are genuine and if the horse is genuine LETS THINK POSITIVE if this is the dream horse then lets not spoil the dream over a missunderstanding.

Yeah I agree but this man who is overseeing the sale, breeds, produces and sells horses for a living, mostly dressage, so he knows his stuff and knows i should have the passport with me.
That is what is making more worried really, if it was a general everyday horse owner then I could understand them not knowing the new owner should have possession of the passport, but he knows his stuff, so why send it off.
an also, I would have needed to sign the passport for change of ownership, Ive never seen it!

The first few times it was at his owners house, fair enough, i aked for it to be sent over, especting to have a quick browse tomorrow to check it then sign it and send it off.

My gut feeling is alarm bells ufortunately.
I really hope Im wrong though.

The yard owner is lovely but this isnt a cheap £500 horse Im risking losing on. Trust can only go so far, and not very far in the horse world.

Don't assume that because he does this for a living that he is 100% au fait with the law. I bought my horse form a very good dealer, but he also gave me the passport when I paid for the horse....immediately after the vetting was completed. No problem you would think....except that he was then delivering the horse to me 2 days later. Technically he was breaking the law too as the passport should have travelled with the horse

totally agree with everything you have said but I would still call the vet and tell him the whole story .

Also if his phone has no signal he wont get the text either. so we are all going to be sat here worrying that he hasnt replied when he cant because he wont have received it.

I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you its the worst feeling in the world just when you thought you were sorted.

please call the vet - what have you got to loose and he may suggest meeting you there tomorrow or something.

Jella, thanks, regarding the signal though its on and off every few seconds if you see what I mean, he generally gets texts straight away but when calling it constantly cuts off and breaks up.

Yes Im going to get hold of the vet asap, typically out doing more vettings, I know Im thinking worse case scenario on everything here, but its a lot of money to us and I wont be happy knowing things could be wrong.

Or wosr case scenario the wrong horse was vetted. When I spoke to yard owner before he confirmed that the vet hadnt seen his passport to vet him, because that was my first question when he said it was already sent off, surely the passport MUST be present at a vetting?
Or how do you know which horse you are vetting?

Oh cripes hope you are o.k with it all and it goes o.k, i'm afraid i can't comment on the passport laws etc, as i am not too hot on them! But just wanted to say, best of luck and i'll have my fingers crossed for you, go with your gut feelings and stick to your guns!

The vet could look at the vaccination record to see the horse identity. After all, we didn't have passports a few years ago. Stop panicking and find out firstly where the passport has been sent, and then call up the body that has the passport and explain the problem. They should be able to fax a copy of the passport to you for checking.

Found out his vaccinations arent up to date too.

Either way if they are being honest or if they are not, he cant travel without the passport and they only told me today it wasnt there, he already told me he knows the law about needing them to travel, ho hum, still waiting to hear back from him.

Thinking the same to be honest Spaniel...he is a lovely horse but if they can lie about little things (or big things if the passport thing is a lie), then who is to say the horse is even as safe as they claim.

My biggest concern after my last mare was a safe horse to do a bit of everything on, quiet enough and large enough for OH (he is 6ft5).

Like I said if he was £500 or even £1500 I might take the chance, but £3400 is a lot of money to us.

ok update regarding passport situation:

Just spoke to owner who has said he is happy to wait until the passport arrives with me and then he will deliver the horse to me.

So it sounds like he did genuinely send the passport off then as he isnt trying to get my money or push for this weekend.

Regarding the vaccinations, it is last years he missed due to being out of work and moved around he missed the vets visit.

the vet who described horse to a tee, every little mark so there is no chance of the wrong horse being vetted.

What do we think now, it sounds pretty genuine to me.
He said, regarding sending passport off that it isnt actually the law that they have to travel with one, he said he was spot checked 2 weeks ago taking youngsters somewhere and they said as long as hey had a passport it was ok?!

ok now everyone who told me not to worry has the right to slap me and call me stupid!

I just dont trust anyone where horses are concerned!

Sounds promising. You dont have to travel one with them if you're going for training but you do for moving their location/for comps (as far as I remember....)

sounds like it is working out after all, really pleased I was so wishing that it would for you. I can really understand you panicking especially as you have had a bad time in the past. good luck !
