 This morning I was walking the dogs and a lady with two JRT's spotted me and put both of her dogs on leads very quickly, her husband then walked over and told me that people like me shouldn't own dogs and what was I trying to prove...
Both Tyson and Bryony were on leads, and Bry had her muzzle on just *incase* anything came up and started on her. (If dogs are nice to her, she is nice back, if they have a pop at her, she gets wound up. She's never bitten but as I dont know her too well yet, I muzzle her)
He said and I'm pretty much quoting him word for word "Why on earth young people feel the need to get themselves these agressive dogs I have no idea, You're obviously scared of the pitbul as you have a muzzle on it even though its on the lead. You ought to be banned from owning dogs young lady"
and then ********d off back to his wife...

The dogs didn't put a foot out of place (for once) and I'm really wound up about the whole thing...

For the record we *think* Bryony is an American Bulldog x Boxer. Something to that effect anyway. She's a rescue so we don't know for sure.

Yes I'm young, and OK my dogs are big but we ended up with Tyson by complete mistake, and Bryony followed as a suitabley sized friend for him and they are both LOVELY. Tyson would never EVER harm dog or human, and Bryony is great with kids and *most* dogs.

And, isnt she far too big to be a pitbull?

Sorry for the long ranty post, I dont do them oftern, but I feel so angry to have been steriotyped like that :(

If you got her from a rescue she wont be a pitbull, as its illegal to rehome them!
Just ignore them, some people seem to have issues with big dogs!

Pitbulls can weigh up to 80lbs, but there is a distinct difference in the looks of an American Bulldog and a Pit. American Bulldogs are usually white, or white with patches, and don't usually have that wrinkling between the eyes. If your dogs weren't causing an issue, then the couple ought to have kept their opinions to themselves.

Don't worry about it, people don't have a clue, I'm pretty friendly with a dog warden who got called out to a report of a pit bull...it was an Akita!!!!

Bry looks WAAAY too big to be a pitbull. I know someone who breeds, works and shows Am Bulldogs and she looks much more typical of one of those.

Don't let numpties wind you up.

Take a deep breath! I would've struggled to keep my mouth shut  people seem to interfere more and more these days because of what they think they know, which is bugger all really.

Its fair enough if people don't know all the breeds of dogs, but to go and acuse someone of owning an illegal dog when they have no idea what the breed is is just ridiculous! I don't think I'd have managed to hold my tongue and remain civil if I'd been in your shoes!!

On the same sort of note, did anyone see Animal 24/7 the other day when they were called out to a 'pitbull'? It was a shar pei (and it was pretty damn obvious what it was). To be fair the dog was insanely aggressive but completely the wrong breed, they don't look anything alike!!

I think some people just like it up on their pedestal whether they are correct or not!

I did! Really was obvious even to someone un-doggy lol
Did you see it this morning? There were 2 pitbulls on it, to be fair i could probably mix a staff and a pitbull at a glance

I hate to repeat myself, but there is no such recognised breed as an APBT in the UK at present.
Just a 'type'.
That means that so many breeds and crossbreeds can be identified as an APBT type.
If there was an actual 'breed', a registry and a database, then things like DNA testing could be utilised.
For instance, my dog had a DNA sample taken and is held in a database on the continent - I can say, undispitably, this is my dog, he is a GSD, from these two parents.
At present, even if your dog is a Lab x Staff, Boxer x Whippet, if it fits the measurements, characteristics and descriptions of the 'type' it can be classed as such and impounded/destroyed.

I can quite honestly say that it took me 5 guesses on that test to pick the Pitbull

Yes I'm angry that in their ignorance they accused me of owning a dangerous dog, but I'm more angry that my age seemed to bother him so much? He virtually insinuated that someone of my age shouldn't own large dogs because I pose as some sort of threat??! That because I am in my early 20's and armed with two (soppy, face licking) dogs that I am going to go round robbing pensioners and knifing policeman...

I felt like running back over to him and saying 'Hey, I'll have you know that I enjoy long winter walks and baking cakes and riding ponies you know, not gun crime...' I'm glad I didnt. I shouldn't have to explain myself or my animals to anyone, unless Tyson does something really bad again

Oh don't worry about the armchair 'experts', leave them to mouthing off at innocent young girls (bet he wouldn't have opened his mouth to a tatooed muscleman with a big dog straining on the end of a lead) or giving his 'opinion' on Sky News message boards, we've had years of that 'oh you only want that breed of dog because you want to look hard' etc etc etc.
Chill out and enjoy your (well behaved) dogs :)

Bless, he obviously felt all big and important and will be boasting about how he did his bit for society and put a dangerous dog owner in their place over the tea and biccies at the next residents' association meeting.....

Or an Akita :p

Noodle I have to say the ONLY dog we meet on walks who doesn't try and have a go is a Staffy. JRTs, collies, x-breeds, greyhounds, always start us first! But we just look scarier so it's always OUR fault :p

Well, she's not far off Tyson's height, and although I know naff all about dogs really, even I was under the impression that this was far too big for an AMPT, or 'Type' ?

You can see why people feel the need to cross the street when they see my two horrific beasts coming towards them, can't you... They're as viscous as anything

if you look at ads the "irish blue" and "long legged staff" that normally is code for pit bull/type.

I wouldnt cross the road if you were out with the GSD but if you were with your other dog i wouldnt mind on lead... off lead id turn round

not because yout a bad dog owner, purely as ive had my dog atacked by a bull breed and bad encounters with staff x's so its awful but i tar them all with the same brush until proven otherwise......

but... my old BC happily played with my friends (tiny)!! staff who was lovely with him.

so like i said i know they arnt all bad and I DO NOT listen to the media...but jst my experience has made me very wary.

Yeah, that seems understandable.
I usually go out walking with one dog on a lead in each hand. If I let Tysie off if it's well away from roads etc but I don't let Bryony off the lead yet at all, and if I ever do, she'll have her muzzle on, as a precaution rather than anything else.
