Before I got my own, I used to compete/ exercise other peoples. It's a great way to ride a range of horses & has made me a better rider.
Stan has far more scope jumping than me & given that I fell off him at xmas jumping, I have someone far more experienced to jump him. I cant wait to be the proud owner at a show. -Soon I hope!!

I am hoping I've found someone to jump my 6 yo. It's taken me ages to find the right person for the job and she seems perfect.
Show jumping is my weak area, plus I am crippled with nerves in the show ring - not a good combination on a green horse!

Generally I like to compete Boo myself - that's partly why I have him - but when he was younger I had a more experienced friend take him round a couple of hunter trials. I wanted to start doing bigger courses but neither of us were very experienced so it made sense to have someone who knew what they were doing on board. I did actually really enjoy watching him, although it was a bit frustrating not to be on him.
I guess it depends if you enjoy competing - if you don't but your horse does, it makes sense.

I used to never see the sense in it...I thought your horse, you compete it.
However, at the end of last year I fell ill, but I didnt want to sell my SJ.
So he went off to a professional to be kept ticking over the winter. He did alright with him, and he came back to me this spring.
However, despite what I expected, I had lost all motivation, and realised I actually enjoyed watching, more than riding.
So hes now on loan to a good friend, who is doing exceptionally well with him. It makes me very proud to watch him, and its nice to think your helping someone else with an extra ride

I have competed other people's horses and they have mainly asked me to do it because they were too nervous/lost interest/happy hacker people that realise their horses love to compete and they don't want to! Have to say that some owners just wanted me to do it for a short while to regain their confidence or see what their horses could do. But others have wanted me to long-term because they enjoy being on the side lines watching and feeling proud it is their horse...all the fun of competing without the nerves!
Personally I don't want anyone else to compete my horse because I love it too much! But if my circumstances changed I would be more than happy to let a competent rider do what I couldn't/didn't want to do.

My cousin competes my horse in dressage because he is good at it and I'm not!
I love watching him move properly and love being involved in a show without all the normal nerves. I jump him and she dressages, so it works out quite nicely.

Well, I'd like to compete my horse myself, but I've had someone jump A higher than I would at a show (because I'm a wuss!) I'm working up to doing it myself though

I bought my horse to compete myself, but if a decent rider wanted to compete him to a higher level than I was capable then I'm fine with that.

I co-own a dressage horse, and my co-owner will compete her as she is a far better rider than me. I am happy schooling at home, but I will never look fantastic in the saddle so its better that she rides her in competitions. The mare has been bought for top level competition, though she is still in novice points so I may do a novice test at some point when I have more confidence in my own dressage riding. I may let my friend compete my own horse when I get her for the same reasons, though would be more inclined to do some low levelo shows myself.
Also for me my riding is my enjoyment. If I started competing I would take it all too seriously and want a better (i.e. grand prix) horse. Every time I get off my horse I am smiling from ear to ear - I don't want to lose that by becoming topo competative.
