Hello all - as you might know from my threads I am looking for a nice summer project and if I like it beyond horse. I have always liked unusual breeds and am thinking of going to see a 10yr old Andalusian gelding imported from Spain 4 months ago and now for sale in the UK. Now as I understand it he is not a PRE - ie he is not registered on the Spanish stud book - but he does have basic papers as proof of breeding. So I suppose I would like to know

unless I want to show him (which I don't) does this have any implications at all?

Someone said I would be able to get his papers / passport over stamped by BAPSA if I wanted to compete in breed classes - is this true?

Given that I want the horse for dressage and hacking and general enjoyment - if I like the horses personality and he passes the vet - should I care if he is a registered PRE or not??

I don't know, but I don't think so! Other than making him a little cheaper for you to buy :) Mine seems to have every paper going and seems to be practically related the King of Spain himself, but it makes no difference to me at all (and everything is in Spanish anyway, so for all I know they could be the old owner's shopping lists on fancy paper...). Those 'in the know' are often quite put out that all I want to do is dressage and hack, but I bought her because she has a truly lovely personality and floats like a dream in trot; breed etc. was irrelevant to me. That said, if she is typical of the breed then I am converted and would never have anything else! She is, to me, absolutely perfect.

I had no problems with my girl, who was imported last year, but the lifestyle in Spain is very different so I would speak to someone familiar with Spanish stallions to find out more about what to expect. You could join the BAPSH Facebook page? I'm sure you could phone BAPSH and ask about registering.

HHO deletes yet another post I have typed out grrr!

Unregistered is pretty much like an unregistered welshie - unlikely to be a good example of the breed and may have conformation issues...

BAPSH have a really good and active Facebook page. Put your question on there and you should get a view pretty quickly.

I don't think it would make a massive difference tbh. There are plenty of PRE/Andalusian owners who do a bit of dressage & a hacking - I hope to be one of them when my little chap is backed!

I agree with a PP that the way horses are treated in Spain is very different. They are certainly shod more upright and the Spanish are waaaay more relaxed about stallions than we are here.

They are a truly amazing breed, I had wanted one for years & years and finally bought mine at 8 months old. He's going to be backed in April (weather depending!) and he's so chilled and very clever! I never would have thought in a million years that I would be able to confidently long rein a 3 year old!

What ever you do with yours, be aware that they are clever and this can be as much of a blessing as a curse! More importantly, have fun - I'll see you on the BASPH page ;)
