Someone PLEASE exlplain this clipping fettish to me!!!???

whoa steady on folks !!!
mines got a bib at the moment (he's still out day and night)
when he comes in for the winter that lot will go ( almost)
its plain cruel to work a horse into a sweat then leave it with wet fur for as long as it takes to dry.
and as for exercise sheets why not ? after all you might only be out for a stretch (walking mainly) isn't it better to keep the muscles warm on a hack whereas if the horse then goes hunting he'll need the coat off.
Its easier to rug up than to have to dry off and definitely more comfortable for the horse.

I just wonder what people will do when it is properly cold, put a duvet under their exercise sheets?!

Twas thinking the same thing!
Flint is as hairy is at the moment for this time of year- he is part welsh so has a little more covering than some, and first things this morn, I turned him out with out a rug to get some sun on him. I have been saying im going to clip im going to clip but I have not yet, he isnt sweaty yet and I dont care if i have to stand there and wash him with a hose (hot water) he loves it, until he gets uncomfortable with his work load I wont now. Im not fussed about him looking stunning!! He has spent the last 2 years clipped out ALL year and I just want him to be comfy!
Weezy- its the peeple who do a blanket clip THEN but an excercise sheet over the top of the hair that gets me? WHY??? there is nowt bloody missing! Maybe I am missing something????

and no one say I clean horse!

I hack/school my pony 6 times a week for sometimes 3 hours ( not schooling!)
Yesterday, we came back wet through even though he has a high chaser clip!

I would never put an excercise sheet on though unless it was minus 5 or something!

I think some people do it purely because it makes the horse looks nice! I clip two of mine as they compete all winter, however I have clipped my ponies who are retired - both are trace clipped in the spring because as they are veterans they really hang on to their coats nowadays (never loose their tum hair) and end up sweating and breathing hard on warm summer days so I think its kinder. And Im about to clip one of those this week, but only her tummy (yes she'll look odd!) because shes a shetland with a very thick coat who LOVES lying in crap all the time so I find her tum hair is always soaking dirty wet which then goes matted and horrid!

AS Hanz said, Ok yes, in the current mid October climate, I think exercise sheets are going too far.

However, to say 'why clip and then use an exercise sheet, leave it on' is a bit much. For example, my Tbx Connemara, was fully clipped for hunting and BSJA. Howver, in real winter, ie December, January, she had an exercise sheet. I warm up going round the village block to stretch her out before schooling, and thus she wears a sheet for that, and then when she gets back adn work begins it comes off. You don't know these people don't do the same.

Similarly, how fair is it to clip a horse, have it rugged up, and thengo to ride it i the cold evening, whip it's rugs off it and get on in the school. To me, a recipe for bucking. I frequently leave a stable rug or sheet over her hind quarters whilst I stretch out.

In total agreement on this point with LadyT and Kickandshout.

I clip mine and they are rugged up to the eyeballs, but they are competing and I ride post 6pm every evening, so to put a horse out and wet at 9pm is not on.

However with modern rugs clipping has become easier, as you can take all the hair off and pretty much let then live out. 15 years ago, you'd have been fighting with soggy and stiff new zealand rugs, so clipping practially meant that they had to live in.

As for exercise rugs, I hate them, I have one for shows but hate riding with them.

must be the fashion

Resisted clipping Pidge until last Monday as had done 3 rounds of SJ the previous Wednesday and he was lathered head to toe, not from what he'd done but because he was so hairy. So made the decision then that it had to come off, however he is in regular work and does a lot even over the winter. If he didn't get hot and sweaty then it would stay on simple really.

I think it's up the the particular horse what type of clip it needs. My chap is worked 5 or 6 days a week in an indoor school and gets very sweaty even with a full clip so when we go for a leisurely hack I will put an exercise sheet on him if it's a bit chilly and to keep him dry (and yes, up here in NE Scotland we've already had a flurry of snow!)
