I'm having problems with my new mare settling in her paddock and occasionally catching her. Charging around, bucking, rearing all sorts. She's on 2 scoops of top spec calmer that works 90% of the time but then she'll go into mare overdrive with her ears pinned back! What am I doing wrong
 
how long have you had her? has she got company of other horses? if she hasnt been with you for long try and think of it from her point of view...taken from familiar surroundings, and familiar people, in a different paddock and dont know this new person , it will take time for her to settle, some take longer than others and mares are usually a bit moresensitive....

Agree with this. Also is your mare in season or coming season?
 
Nearly 3 months now and she shares with 2 old boys separated by electric fencing. I'm trying everything but getting pressure from angry mum and sister who were trying to catch her!
 
I did consider her being in season but the catching problem is only every now and again. Debating some magic syringes for those moments and maintaing the top spec. Actually feel like I'm just guessing at what to do
 
Kept the head collar on from the last time but she doesn't let you get close enough for a treat. Why can horses make you feel so inadequate at times
 
have you tried pretending you dont want to catch her? try doing lots of groundwork with her. maybe once she is caught, put a lunge line on the headcollar and practice walking towards her, giving a treat and/or a stroke then walk away but keep hold of the end of the lunge line..try not to use the lunge line to pull her too you but it will just stop her running off... keep doing this in the field, dont bring her in, and eventually she will come to you....its a bit like join up but my version from 40 years ago (before monty roberts tried to tell us we were all doing it wrong!!) sounds like she is just being a girly and needs to know what the routine is and get used to doing as you want not what she wants!!!!!
 
Thank you thank you thank you, I haven't tried this but will do tomorrow as my lovely boss has said I can go early and put her to bed. In fact I'm going to spend all weekend attached to the lunge line doing this with a pocket full of polos. Monty Roberts is nowhere near as good as you x
 
I can confirm since Friday my little baby bear has been walking towards me in the paddock every time. I admit that I'm attached to a polo every time but it's progress. Thanks you all for your advice
