I just thought it might be better here!
We're not specifically looking for someone by the way lol.
Does anyone keep their horses at home and have someone do yard duties for them, like muck out and feed?

How much would I expect to pay for someone to come and muck out 10 horses/ponies and feed in the mornings, and turn out or take in whatever was needed, change rugs and give a quick groom where necessary? Would they be paid by hour or an agreed price for all the tasks? And not as a one-off, but every week Monday - Friday?

Depends whether you are employing or taking on a freelance groom?
Used to get paid £7.50/hour to do this kind of work (employed)
I'd say you'd have to pay a little bit more for a self-employed than if you were employing to cover insurance etc.

I would pay an agreed price. It saves on paying through the nose for slow people (otherwisw known as p**s takers!). Been there and got the t shirt!

i would def go for an agreed rate but depends on how dirty & big the beds are & how far they would have to walk to turn out etc?

i may be being stingey but i think this would be about 3 1/2 -4 hours work a day (1/2 -1 hour feed & turnout & about 3 hours to muck out) so would £150 pw?

However if the person would be doing all services to your 10 all day (in effect you could go on holiday & not worry) i would think you would be looking at the region of £300-£400 pw

That sounds like a lot of work - looking after 10 horses would take up most of the day.

If it's just feed, TO and muck-out with a few extra bring-ins, then I can't see 10 horses taking any more than 5 hours, which if started at 7/8am isn't too much of the day.

If there's more to it than that, then in all honesty the OP sounds as if an employed groom is needed, as opposed to a self-employed groom who may not be able to fit in existing clients with the hours required.

It may even work out cheaper, as although there will be employer's NIC to pay, as well as liability insurance, over the long term I would imagine that the equivalent hourly rate of an employed groom would still be less than that of someone working self-employed.

There would also be HMRC employment status to consider if you were using a self-employed groom, but that would depend on other factors and is really quite dull so I won't mention it any further

I muck out up the road 3 days a week. I do 12 stables (all straw), including taking horses in and out but only rarely do I have to rug. I do it in 2 - 2 1/2 hours and get £7.50 an hour. It kills me! I'm also a speedy mucker outer rather than a beautiful one - my banks and rolled edges wouldn't win any prizes!

We would have rubber mats in the stables and would be using whichever bedding was best for the horses. But I'll ask that question another time lol. Do rubber mats speed up mucking out considerably?
