I am having a really bad day :( . So on the vets advice I moved Rocky to a new yard with a better surface on the school (just before leaving old yard Rocky's leg swelled around the fetlock and upon vet's advice we treated it as a sprain).

Arrive at new yard, schooled twice in the new fantastic school.... leg blows up again the day after. Been at the vets this morning, and scan shows a lesion at the bottom of the suspensory on the inside. Three months "rest" (stable and small paddock pen) and 15 mins per day walking on hard ground.

I am gutted. It was this time last year exactly that we started three months box rest for his sudden onset lameness (that we never got to the bottom of). I know he had had a hard life before I got him as he was a polo pony, so I guess i've learnt my lesson well and truly there.

I know damn well now that he is probably only ever going to be able to be a happy hacker, which is gutting because I wanted to do more with him as my first horse - we had had so many lessons and had started doing dressage and were getting some really good comments and scores.

I was looking at loans to see if I could buy another horse, but to be honest the fact I was looking at a loan kind of proves to me that I can't afford a second horse.

Pointless post, but just, totally, gutted :(

I'm sorry to hear about your poor pony, he doesn't sound like he's having a good time!!

If it helps though, my boy did his suspensory a few years ago, and that healed within a few months, after which we were doing jumping, dressage and xc and all sorts, so don't give up yet!!!

I hope u manage to suss the original lameness though, and your little horsey gets better soon!!!!

I am sorry to hear about your horse but have to say that I have been there so many times I sometimes wonder why I bother.

Unfortunately it seems some horses are just prone to injuries. Maybe once your horse is off box rest you will have to re-evaluate his purpose and if he is not going to be upto what you want then perhaps sell or loan him out to somebody who will give him a quieter life.

My mare is only just back in work after a kissing spine op last year, and I couldn't ride her all last summer. However for you, we are only just into march, so if your horse recovers, you will still have a good few months of nice weather to hack if nothing else!

It's so hard. I'm not sure I could sell/loan him for fear of someone pushing him too far and me not being able to check he is looked after right? But then on the other hand I desperately want to be able to school and compete... Albeit starting at the bottom!
I'm just gutted I really am?!

I know how you feel, as I sometimes think the same thing!

My horse was sound for a total of 16 weeks last year due to one injury or another and it's so hard to take because I do everything I can to take care of her and keep her sound. So she just finds another new injury to keep herself off work...........

This is completely how I feel! I have had him three years and have done everything to take the best care of him! I couldn't bare to loan him because he is my first horse, and i love him to pieces because he has the personality of a saint... yet I cant help but sit here and see everyone going out and about and feeling really envious!

I really feel for you because I'm in exactly the same position. If it's not one thing it's another and it seems I just get a taste of how good he can be when he goes wrong again. There have been lots of tears lately and I really don't know which route to take now.
