Somerford Camps

Active Rider always did, and so does the replacement (while AR is on hiatus) Ace horse camps
I used to love the Active Rider camps, the food, the night-time... I was gutted when they closed.

Is Ace the same? Is it a family thing? I didn't pursue them as I wondered about any ill feeling. I went with a different provider earlier this year and, whilst the camp was good, it was not as sparkling!

ACE is run by someone who used to work with Active Rider at their camps. They are friends of many years and they were supported by AR in starting this year. The feeling of the camp is very similar to AR I would say, but next year I think they may have a different format if AR returns.

I’ve done several of the Camp plus ones! The lady who organises them is great and all the instructors are fab too!
this is who i went with this year and last, but i was walking past the other pavilions wistfully smelling their sausage & bacon breakfasts🤣

Realistically I’d doubt if she’d find a date now if she wanted to return - unless she runs single pavilion one- which would be shame as Jane (& Bobby), who ran the original Horsecamp and took it all around the country are one of the reasons all these camp facilities exist - they made all the venues and the organisers realise there was money to be made providing the service- round of applause to them!

Jane was amazing.

I went to my first camp in a low place as mum had just died after years of awful decline with dementia. The instructions brought me to tears. It was the section where Jane said she could provide whatever I needed, from plasters to headache tablets, to sanitary protection, to incontinence pads. Now, I didn't need any of those items, but I felt so protected knowing that nothing was off limits. It felt a bit like having a caring mum again.

The food was amazing. All freshly cooked and tasty.

I wasn't so much into the alcohol (a bottle of wine did me the full weekend) but the way Jane included everyone into an activity was FAB. I have video of me line dancing at a time when I didn't think I would ever want to dance again.

Some people were simply born to be organisers.

I really hope that Active Rider opens up again.
