Normally I am very accepting about how people turn themselves and their horses out - riding in jeans and wellies does not bother me in the slightest (as long as they're wearing a hat ;) ) - heck even ride in hotpants and I wouldn't look twice.

HOWEVER there is something about the flap flap flap of seeing someones long hair either loose or in a ponytail slap against their back whilst riding that causes this inexplicable bubble of rage inside me. Especially jumping as it slightly flicks. Infact I think its worst when its in a ponytail.

Take me to a show and this rage intensifies. Sometimes I think I might explode from seeing so many long blonde ponytails after going BS'ing (Ellen W isn't to help - I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw it had been cut off at Olympia, although I did like the blondiness).

It is not long hair that bothers me - I have long hair and have it in a bun whilst riding, and then also covered in a hairnet competiting.

I think it may stem from a story my DC telling us in Pony Club that a girl once got scalped when she fell from her pony and it stood on her ponytail. In retrospect I'm 98% sure this didn't happen and she just wanted our branch to look well turned out, but I can only presume this is where this deep rooted illogical despise came from.

This thread is not meaning to offend anyone that does not anally wear their hair in a bun whilst riding like I do (!!), but merely to express some strange potentially deep rooted physiological problem I have??!! :confused: And was just wondering if anyone else had one thing horsey that just gets to them for no real reason at all???

Riding in wellies enrages me more, I think it is more dangerous. I ride with a long (not blonde) ponytail, a bun affects the way my hat sits so I never have a bun. I wear a net to compete though, and normally double up my ponytail for jumping as it is more risky.
 
Lol, that is random! I can't say ive ever noticed people hair when riding! My biggest bug bear is no hi-vis or saying thank you when out hacking. The amount of times ive been driving and seen a horse rider - gone around them 'wide and slow' to then recive no thank you or even a nod - drives me mad and Im a horse person! People who dont even like horses may not slow down for the next one they see coz they think we're all arrongant knobs!!!!

Yes better up for showing and dressage obviously, for turnout reasons.

People already think riders are rich, posh and stuck up their asses, lets have a normality factor in the equasion. :)
 
ohhh I have to agree (when competing)! We've had the same horror story at PC :rolleyes: & I don't quite see how a hair net would stop this, but I do think they should be worn for smartness :)
Not fussed when people are at home, but it does bug me when it's not tied up at all. Aaaanddddd how rediculous does it look with a fringe sticking out the front?!?! haha :) Although there's much worse things people do lol

I don't mind at all when people are just hacking out, but I think people look really scruffy and amateurish when they have a pony tail with a show jacket. It does seem to occur in BS more. At the end of the day it doesn't really affect their riding though! I just like smart turnout. Whats the point of having the horse look great if the rider doesn't.

I just want to know what happened the BSJA (BS) rule that they brought in a few years back about people not being able to compete with their hair in a long pont tail (past the shoulder line I think the rule was). You would actually get told off and told to tie it up. This was in seniors as well. The rule seems to have now disappeared though and more and more people are showjumping with their hair down.

To be honest I do think it looks scruffy in comps (it doesn't anger me though). I hold my hands up and will say my hair isn't the neatest all the time by any means but I don't wear it in a long ponytail. I think it would irritate me really if I wore my hair in a long pony tail - all that flapping about!
 
I like having my long hair in a pony tail when I ride! It keeps it out of my way and looks nice! I do wear it in a bun and with a hairnet for hunting/competing though!
 
i have quite long hair and the only time i tie it in a bun is when i compete dressage.
Any other time it is just tied back, merrily flapping away down my back, causing me not one single bother.
And OMG i sometimes dont even tie it up, just stick my hat on over the top of my luscious locks - and you know, it has never ever hindered my ability to ride a horse, how strange! ;)

I quite like long ponytails .... it looks young and un'stuffy! :)

Hasn't Ellen gone brown/redish now? I thought I saw her on TV with brownish hair?

In all honesty though I normally wear it in a bun but my hairband snapped when I was tieing my hair back so had to wear it like that :o
 
I ride with my hair swishing around most days!

I can never find a bobble and don't really have the time in my busy working schedule to search the house/car/work for a spare one. I keep a hairnet in my competition 'bag' so there's always one there when I need it.

To be honest I couldn't give a monkey's chuff whether someone likes my 'riding hairstyle' or not!!!!

There are far more terrible fashion faux pas in the world today to worry about other than hairdos when under hat. For example, I got mildly irritated today when a young gentlemen walking in front of me bent down to show ill-fitting trousers round his hips and his brightly coloured undies popping out of the top! I soon forgot about it, because I noticed a lady whose tattoo was showing above her waistline...
 
Always have my hair up neatly and in a hair net for showing, but never thought twice about a ponytail for jumping! Only do local tiny teeny jumping but i can imagine falling off and having your hair trodden on must hurt!! Will certainly start putting it up properly from now on, i had never even thought about the dangers of it :rolleyes:
 
Hair doesn't bother me BUT...........

I can't stand seeing middle aged women in coloured hat silks whilst hacking! Don't know why but it really gets my goat! Very happy to see kids in them though, the funkier the better in those circumstances!

Maybe I'm just odd??
 
well im buggered then cos i have a long blonde pony tail (sometimes just loose), ride in wellies in winter and no hi-viz (red coat and wellies makes up for it= well fit ;))

I was considering curling it and wearing it loose when showing purely to get noticed, but might not now if it makes you cross 8/ atm i just hairnet and stick it all under my hat

a bun (at the nape of your neck) is incredibly dangerous actually, risks breaking your neck if you do have a fall

Well i'll be damned if I am following that! Shows and competitions yes. But my visits to the yard and my time with my pony is the one time I don't have to worry about looking like a scruff bag! I can wear my baggy hoody and torn jeans, walk around with hay in my hair and not give a hoot :D

I agree with KristmasKatt - if I wear my hair in a bun it afffects how my hat sits and also presses strangely at the back of my head and gives me headache. However, I do like a funny double ponytail where I don't pull it all the way through so it doesn't flap about as it anoys me tapping me on the back every stride!! At any show/competition it's stuffed in a hairnet.

My childhood Instructor used to ban us from wearing hairpins and so on for safety reasons. We were only allowed to wear a net and / or a soft bobble. Can completely understand why, so dangerous to fall on something metal and hard...........
 
I so agree. I don't wear a hairnet when not competing but I always make sure my hair's in a neat bun at the base of my hat. Hate ponytails swinging around, looks very chavvy.
 
I don't mean to be rude but some of the replies to this post are ridiculous, and almost pathetically funny!

I agree we should be smart for competitions along with our horses. But really, who cares what we look like whilst out hacking as long as we're being safe and enjoying our horses? I think most of us have more to worry about than the style of our hair whilst most of it is covered by a hat anyway. Most stupid thing I've read all day, no disrespect, but it is!
