Something about seeing long hair down someones back makes me bubble with anger....

Obviously for Showing and Hunting as its more correct to do so but at unaffiliated shows or riding at home, I don't see the problem?

As I said, for hacking I'm not too bothered, I don't think anyone is, although personally I would have to have it tied up otherwise it would drive me mad. Sorry but even unaffiliated shows or evening showjumping I think hair should be tied up.

Re. long hair; our local hunt are having a hunter trials event soon and have stipulated on the schedule that long hair should be tied securely so that it "does not obscure" the riders' number!!!

Enough said.

Personally, having had long hair in the past, and ridden with it in a plait, I think if hacking then its up to the rider to do as they please, however there may be safety issues in having hair hanging down if going through low-hanging trees/branches etc as it would be easy to get caught up I guess (tho' never happened to me).

It was drilled into us at Pony Club that at any PC events and/or competing, hunting, or whatever, that hair should be tied up securely AND put under a hairnet. No exceptions to the rule!

Something about people making comments about my appearance (pony tail or otherwise) makes me want to tell them to mind their own :-)

There are far too many important things in life to worry about to give a toss about someone else's appearance. Why bother about something that doesn't affect you and that you can't do anything about anyway?

Riding in wellies enrages me more, I think it is more dangerous. I ride with a long (not blonde) ponytail, a bun affects the way my hat sits so I never have a bun. I wear a net to compete though, and normally double up my ponytail for jumping as it is more risky.

I ride in wellies - Ariat Mudbusters which are actually designed for riding in! What's your problem with that?

Haha, I've had a good old chuckle at this thread! Luckily I have the blessed virtue of humour!

I used to have really long hair when I was younger, it used to do the 'propella' when I was cantering, you'd have hated it!!:P :P

I now can't stand it flapping around in my mouth eyes etc etc, always in a bun.

I had a fringe too, my hat used to leave the most ridiculous ridge in it, I'd drive home in my hat so people didn't see it, although, in hindsight I probably looked more of a fool doing that....

Sadly, no matter how hard I try my horse always looks a scruff bag - think I will have to be really mean this year and get him scrubbed up properly when I go out - why oh why did I get a grey

I'm pretty scruffy at home - my waxed jacket is in a disgusting state. I mean at shows I like to be neat and tidy - me and the horse.

Know how you feel with a grey. Had two when younger on clay mud - not funny! But they really beat everything else when gleaming white. We still have one skewbald, so have half a horse to scrub!

Its quite funny how this thread has rattled some people.

I don't mean to be rude but some of the replies to this post are ridiculous, and almost pathetically funny!

I agree we should be smart for competitions along with our horses. But really, who cares what we look like whilst out hacking as long as we're being safe and enjoying our horses? I think most of us have more to worry about than the style of our hair whilst most of it is covered by a hat anyway. Most stupid thing I've read all day, no disrespect, but it is!

agree with above
lifes too short to worrying about what your wearing as long as you wear a hat and hair away from face so you see where your going..ok different if competing etc

dont like to see riders ride in wellies but their really good stylist wellies out there which dont look that bad and even worse riding in trianers

i have long hair and tie up with a bobble ,

^^^^^ this

Having lived with my husband working in a war zone, i quickly decided that life was too short and too precious to worry about ridiculous and petty things, especially people concerning themselves with what i do and how I look. Not being perfect, I do get wound up about things that don't really warrant it sometimes but quicky try and remind myself to 'get a grip'.

ps I have had a swinging blonde ponytail since before Ellen Whitaker was born....maybe she copied me! Yay I'm a fashion icon!!
