Wow, what a horrible situation. Given the location you are in and the difficulty in getting a vet out quickly I think that the course of action taken was 100% in the best interests of the horse. I can't imagine if there had not been anyone there willing to do the job waiting with a horse that badly injured for so long. I had a 20 minute wait with my horse with one fractured leg and it was awful.
