Hi all, being totally new to the H&H forum today, I am really hoping someone can advise! We have a 12hh rescue pony who is approx 5-6 yo. As we don't know his history I've started from scratch doing what I'd do with any youngster. So all was going well until today - I noticed when I went to long-rein him that his tongue was over the bit. I say 'over' but actually his tongue was practically rolled up in a ball at the back of his throat, so it was really neither over nor under the bit, just withdrawn out of the way - . I immediately changed the bit from a happy mouth jointed with cheekpieces to a Magic bit which is straight like a Mullan but with a port and I THINK this helped. Certainly he was happy enough in his work but then when I took the bridle off again I'm pretty sure the tongue was up to its antics again - its hard to say when you can't see whats going on in their mouth 100% of the time. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated - his teeth have been done, and I'm not keen on too many gadgets, tongue-tying, or using nosebands to strap his mouth closed (at this stage anyway). Thanks in advance!

My horse used to do this, so I asked the dentist if he could see any reason why, he couldn't, but he said some horses experience the same sort of feeling we get if we bite a bit of foil. Ow! I changed my horse's bit to a plastic one and he's never gone better. He is a sensitive soul though:rolleyes:

have you bitted him in the breaking bit which is supposed to allow them to accept a bit and the dangly things lying on the tongue are supposed to keep the tongue down and also so they can mouth them.

I'd try a copper roller. But I would be inclined to pop a bit on while he's on the yard for 5 mins, without working him & just watch to see if I could spot exactly why/what he's doing. Whether its simply because he's still at the mouthing the bit stage, or generally likes messing about with his tongue, or dislike of the bit for whatever reason.
