OK lovely people - i need something stronger for my mare when jumping we currently use a Drop cheek happy tongue Bomber Bit, and she goes lovely in this for hacking and schooling, however, she absolutely loves to jump its her most favourite thing in the whole world and she gets incredibly excited and very strong, my instructor has said we need to look at different biting options.

I am considering trying one of the universal cheek bits, however, i am concerned that she doesn't really like a joint, but also with the happy tongue she tends to lean on it, I have been looking at the ported barrel bomber, but was wondering if any of you had any thoughts on this or other suggestions.

That's like a hanging cheek with a port isn't it?

Why don't you try a Nueue Schule Trans Angled Lozenge Pelham. You have the poll action like you do with the hanging cheek.

An innovative lightweight, elegant cheek design very popular in the show ring incorporating the NS Tranz mouthpiece. This Pelham is designed to be comfortable promoting a rounder outline whilst also encouraging more freedom through the shoulder. Often sourced for control and self-carriage, this Pelham usually gives more feel and response as opposed to a standard solid mouthpiece that often results in fixing and blocking, culminating in a wooden feel.

The Neue Schule Salox is Neue Schule’s unique composition – This is a warmer softer metal with a very high copper content and Neue Schule additive to maximise on oxidation (Nickel Free). This promotes salivation, mouthing, acceptance and harmony. Many horses that have previously only been bittable in rubber or nylon have proven extremely comfortable in the Neue Schule Salox. All bits in the Neue Schule Collection have high density stainless steel rings, cheeks, etc., for appearance and durability.

What noseband do you use?
At one jumping clinic I was getting carted into fences; the instructor sorted out our noseband (a flash, but it was so loose as to be ineffective) and it was like riding a different horse

Thanks for your replies, I have a few different bits that people have let me try, but yes I am looking at a Kimblewick I have a Pelham, but its the two reins which i find is hard work for jumping.

Two reins aren't necessarily needed, I used to use roundings. But the poll pressure and the curb chain (if fitted correctly with a lip strap to hold it in the correct position) are usually enough to make a difference. If your horse is a WB you might find the thinner mouthpiece is more advantageous.

Hanging cheeks don't have a poll action - quite the opposite in fact, they release pressure on the poll.

A kimblewick is my go to for a 'next bit up'. Alternatively, would she find a Waterford acceptable? Or even just something with a loose ring so she can't grab it - I recently switched from a Myler eggbutt to a loose ring Sprenger copy and it's made a huge difference (on the flat) to my youngster, who would lean and run through the bit in the eggbutt.
