I've recently changed my horses' feed from Happy Hoof to Simple Systems Lucie Stalks. (Lami-prone pony, ulcer prone horse). They only really get a small amount anyway as a carrier for supplements. It does seem very dull in comparision to the Happy Hoof. (Which I know is probably due to the lack of molasses they shouldn't have!) The pony seems happy enough with it but the horse isn't too impressed! He'll eat it but has tipped his bucket over in a huff a few times which means I don't know whether or not he's eating his supplement.

I wondered about adding something to make it a bit tastier. Some kind of herb or something? Mint? It needs to be something which won't affect ulcers though. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had a similar problem when on SS - in the end, I resorted to making the chaff as damp as possible to bind the supplement and adding mint or garlic. I now feed Dengie Good-Doer, which is low sugar and mint flavoured as SS got a bit faffy!

Change to Forget me not Farms chaff? It is molasses free, lowest DE @ just 6.5 & they love it as it's flavoured with vanilla so great for hiding supplements. It's actually made by Dengie!
Shame it's in a nasty pink bag but you can't have everything!

I have not done this myself but recently seen a lot about adding salt to feeds - very often the forage has too high a potassium : sodium ratio and adding salt is beneficial then. I guess if you get your forage analysed and the salt ratio is not too high then you could add salt to the feed and see if that makes it more palatable.

Simple systems do a minty supplement thing to improve tastiness. I can never find much about simple systems on here I'm always searching!

I've found fenugreek added to a feed has made my fussy eater lick the bowel clean, it's also supposed to be good for digestion problems/ulcers

I tried everything including adding mint dried and fresh, fenugeek, garlic 4 different types of chaff and fast fibre. I have found that a mugful of speedi beet works a treat its unmollased sugar beet so ideal for lamis. I just add a mugful with a plain chaff and mix that with his supplements and he wolfs it down.

If you google speedi beet (can't remember who makes it) and contact them they will send you a sample.

Thanks for the ideas.

I did used to feed Speedibeet years ago and have used it to disguise wormer and medication in the past (Agree, it did work a treat!) but ideally wanted to use something I don't have to soak. Loved the idea of Forget me not chaff but it looks like it has straw in it. :(

Bought a tub of mint yesterday and seems promising. (Licked clean buckets this morning and tonight). Hadn't heard of fenugreek being used. Might be worth a try too...

my mare has decided to be very fussy with her feed this year and has lost loads of weight so i have just started with fast fibre and she licks the bowl clean....it needs double the amount of water to feed and only takes 60 secs to mix so no soaking for ages. i emailed allen and page for advice and asked them for a sample as she has been so picky, they sent me a sample with details of how to feed etc and also sent me a voucher for £3, so i would recommend them.

I've just started feeding mine grass pellets and they wolf it down. I've been soaking them because they're really hard and I didn't want to risk choke, but my appy is even eating his superskratch now :)
