Hi all, as said in the caption really. Son is 13 and about 5’6 but is very slim. For his second pony we have been looking at 14.2s but i fear these might not last long. Opinions?

I think for a second equine you should look at bigger, especially if he does PC or competing. Horsey term but how big is he likely to make? lol!

Agreed, I bought my son a 14.2hh at 12 yrs old, when he was around 5ft 3 and 8 stone - he rode him until he was 14yrs and by then was 5ft 8 and 12 stone!!!! In hindsight I should have gone for bigger, but sadly my son also lost interest in horses at the same time he outgrew this one, so not the end of the world....

Facing a similar dilemma. 13yo son outgrowing his 13hh. Been looking at 14.1 NF's upwards. Sat on a 14.2hh the other week and I wasn't convinced that height would last too long. He's 5'3/4 at present, I'm 5'7, dad 5'8. I ride a 14.1 NF.

I don't want to part with too much money only to have to go through all the horrendous searching process again too quickly. We went to see a 15.2hh but never got on as it was lame ?.

We have a 13.3hh that he's backed and now riding so we may just stick with her for the time being (although I have just advertised her?) and sell the smaller one.

I'd be tempted to go for a 15hh if I were you. Whereabouts are you? There doesn't seem much about here. ?

Hacking chum picked up a 15.1 for her then 12 yr old son at Easter.
Son was 13 last week, he has shot up 3 inches since February and gone leggy at now 5ft 7. Not heavy but tall. His 17yr old brother is 6ft 1.
Junior son is getting on v well with new horse, will be doing unaff sj this winter.

I think if you are competing under affiliated rules you need to squash onto ponies, otherwise give them a bit of growing room if you are able to.

Looks like we will be going for a horse then as he loves jumping and xc. I am 5’5 and OH is 5’10 but my 15yo daughter has shot up to over 5’11! Must be from my father…

14.2 for affiliated and hope he doesn't grow too much and no bigger than 15.2 to get him a horse that is more likely to stay sound for longer and spending his own money. Mind you tough well made and sensible 15.2 won't be easy to find or cheap.
