So, I will be moving to the Baslow area in the next month or so....

I have absolutly NO contacts for this area, so will need the following:

Farrier (horse just needs the odd trim, so barfoot experience perferred!)
Vet (prefer the old fashioned type!)
Feed supplier- Someone who stocks Sarecens, or willing to buy in for me

Also where are the best places to ride out?

What are the local competition centres?

Whats the best tack shop?!

Are there any local Riding Clubs?

EEkkkk :-)

Feed supplier, you have CWG at Darley Dale and Torne Valley at Bakewell.
I think you might be a bit limited on vets as it is pretty rural, you'll be looking at Bakewell practices I think.....
Farrier, mine is from Crich so might travel up to you if you want his details, or if you want barefoot Debbie Glennon is based in Bakewell.

Tack shops...... ummmm you will get some stuff at CWG and Torne Valley, I don't know of any small tackshops near you. Matlock Saddlery is the closest that comes to mind, or I'm not sure whether Hope Valley Saddlery have a shop any more, but their warehouse is near Hope and wouldn't be far from you. There is also Decathlon near junction 26 of the M1. There is an independant tack shop just north of Buxton too but I can't remember the name.

Competition Centres, well you are likely to have a bit of a drive on your hands..... Beaver Hall is over near Leek, Hargate Hill is up near Stockport, near Derby you have Barleyfields, Hargate, Broomfield (Derby College) and Draycott House and there is Eland Lodge near Ashbourne. Don't know if there is anywhere else closer. You are close to the Bakewell showground for their big agricultural show. There are good shows at Ashbourne, Ashover, and Leek too.

Riding out, I think you'll be pretty spoilt, there are lots of bridlepaths around, you can ride in the parkland at Chatsworth, there is the High Peak Trail and Monsal Trail nearby too. I posted a link earlier to information about the penine bridleway which passes pretty close to you.

:D

Kat I already owe you a drink down the local!

Thank you so much for all of this! I will get in touch with the feed places and check they stock my gals feed.

If you (or anyone reading this) has Debbies contact details that would be great. :-)

Looking forward to checking out all the local tack shops :-) I currently have monthly trips to Ingatestone to buy MORE stuff I dont really need! xx

Debbie's details here on the UKNHCP site. I haven't used her, but have had her recommended to me by a friend on my yard twice when I have thought about switching to a trimmer. I also ran her name past a couple of barefoot gurus to check she was ok.

I think CWG might be mole valley now.... it is on the main A6 at Darley Dale so easy to find, and Torne Valley is on the A6 on the way into Belper. There are probably loads of little local places nearby too though. If you need something that is difficult to get hold of then seals is good at getting stuff in and supplies a lot of the smaller places nearby.

I'll remember that offer of a drink! ;)

Perfect, thanks Kat! :-) Yup any excuse to have a little drink and you have been VERY helpful!

GG... so excited. Its a MASSIVE upheaval.... currently looking at a new aviary as i also have a small flock of little birds, so want to make sure they have a nice new house too! :-)

I'm a little further south - in Nottinghamshire - I just adore Bakewell and the surrounding countryside! On the tack shop front there is also Thomas Irving's in Chesterfield; big Equestrian "Superstore"; that'll only be about 20 mintues from Baslow I'd think.

Kat's mentioned most of the local Competition centre's; I've never been but Speetley Equestrian Centre's in Chesterfield and is probably the closest place to you. It's pretty new - only opened last year. http://www.speetleyec.co.uk/

Hi, your nearest riding club is Hope Valley based at Bamford about 20mins away. Good hunting with the Barlow who also have a hunter trial in May and are hosting a le trec in July. Bakewell hosts both Bakewell show in August and the Barlow show in JulyNearest xc course is Unthank in the Barlow Valley (B5061). Really good hacking and access to realy local moors via the eastern moors riding group.

Rob Lewis is a great farrier and near you in Hulland Ward.

Eland Lodge's address is confusing because it is actually in Draycott in the clay which is 11 miles from Ashbourne - because the boundarys of four counties/Local Authorities adjoin at Five Lane Ends, we have been carved up. We live on the other side of the main road and are in East Staffs, 3 miles down the road and it's Derbyshire Dales for a few hundred yards then Back to East Staffs, but we all have Derby City postcodes!

I think someone had been in the pub when the county and Local Authortiy borders were changed back in the 80's.

Eland Lodge is brilliant, Just don't go to Ashborne!

Paddy

Thanks so much GG for the link to Speetley, looks like theyve created a rather nice comptition yard there!

JDH01, ill take a look into Hope Valley. I did Le Trec a few years ago on my old girl (just to get her out and about doing something) and she won the Kelly Marks Winter Series! shes good at cantering slow through poles from SJ days!

xx

If you are into le trec Hope Valley hold at least 1 if not 2 comps and east midlands le trec group are holding a big competition on the land at Barlow Kennels in June or July I cant quite remember the date, it is in the bhs website as it is a qualifier.

Re TREC: The competition on 20-21 July at Barlow hunt kennels is NOT being run by EMDG!!
It is organised by White Horse Trec Group, affiliated riding club who organise trecs every month around East Midlands and Yorkshire. Google white-horse-trec for more info.
Hope to see you at one of them!

The Four Shires Bloodhounds also hunt the area.

Not sure if anyone mentioned Stubley Hollow near Dronfield as an occasional competition venue. Also bit further to Parklands shop and arena for dressage and sj at junction 31 M1.

As for competitions, do try and get to the Hargate Hill Charity Show at Charlesworth, near Glossop (not Stockport as someone has said) on Sunday, 16th June. It's run by the livery clients and is in it's 24th year. Glossop Pony Club has its shows there as well.

I'll get shot for forgetting to mention the Four Shires. Brilliant hunt. I am completely hooked and have subscribed for the last 3 seasons. Wonderful folks, and so welcoming.

Seconded! They are lovely, I went out with them in 2012 and everyone was so nice and friendly and welcoming.
