One horse being PTS in the morning leaving my 3 and a half year old youngster and my friend's 14 year old mare. Both live out.
Young horse really lacks confidence and has a breakdown when away from other horses. He isn't ridden as not restarting him til next year. Mare is ridden and will be going out on short hacks.
How do I manage the situation as I can see trouble ahead..?? :rolleyes3:
I will, of course, be getting straight on to building my boys confidence away from his friend but I cant rush him, its going to take time. Any ideas/hints/tips/suggestions most welcome :)
(Please note that he is a big horse and knows how strong he is...Im working hard with him to instill manners and he has come a long way BUT he does still sometimes forget himself, esp when panicky).
 
I always think it is better to leave a horse in with plenty to eat when its companions leave it. If possible it is better for your horse to leave the other behind, than to be left.
 
We had a mare who was really bad about being left. We found she was worse if she had opportunity to gallop round and wind herself up.

So can only suggest you have some diversion like a bucket feed and hay. Also could you consider either getting him to take a bridle or lunge reign to hold him while you get him used to being left.

There is always a new challenge with horses.
 
I dont have a stable unfortunately but will try removing him first and using food to reinforce the wonder of being alone lol.
He is incredibly special to me and Im determined to get everything right with him.
 
It is about him learning that his friend will come back! Short times a part building up to longer, has worked for me.

Your alternative is a non ridden companion from a rehoming charity if you find he really does not settle.
