SO I have been with OH for almost 3.5 years. He is very athletic but had never been near a horse till he met me. I got him on my little tb a couple years ago once for about 5 mins and he loved it, said he felt like a cowboy (was brought up on a steady diet of John Wayne films so this is a positive comment!) But he has not been on one since.

In a recent attempt to spend more time with me he agreed to have another go. We dusted the cobwebs off Lottie as being most suitable horse, 31, unlikely to bolt or spook but he is under her max weight limit, just.

She was so kind to him, just a few strides of trot at a time until he got the idea and not a hint of naughtiness, no napping to the gate or anything, she even tracked up and tucked her head in!

OH is a natural! He didn't bounce or wobble at all, just sat lightly in the saddle and did exactly as asked. He was very soft with his hands and kept them very still for a beginner. The only problem he had was keeping his heels down, not helped by being long in the leg on a lazy 15hh and his legs tended to push forward.

He now wants to come next week and has chosen a hat as mine is too 'girly'! I have stressed that it is important to me that he had a go but if he didn't like it I won't be offended, but he is adamant he wants to come next week!

So here's the questions, I have advised him to wear supportive rather than loose undercrackers and jogging bottoms or combats rather than jeans as I have heard that jeans can pinch in unpleasant places. Is this right or could he be more comfy in jeans??

Is there a better/different way of sitting that men tend to adopt to women which would be better for him? As he only did some sitting trot and didn't bounce there was no issue but I want to get him rising next week and I don't want to damage him!

Very proud and quite cautious of breaking him! Sorry for essay and thanks for any help!

Well done to your OH and to your girl for being so kind to him.

Can't advise on the technique, but all I can say is that my OH still regales people with the ditty about when he forgot to change his pants for a riding lesson. According to him it is M&S Y-fronts all the way!

Happy shopping!

My OH often wears jeans, but having ridden last week in breeches says yes, they are much more comfortable. I would go with the trackies, and try to kit him out with half chaps - if you have full chaps, might they fit? It wouldn't matter if they were a little short, but they would be comfortable.

I've said to OH before that tight undies must be the most comfortable, but he doesn't seem to have any problems no matter what he wears. An old (very horsey) BF of mine used to always wear very tight Speedo's under his breeches - kept everything nicely under control!!!!

definately no trackies or too loose jeans, or boxers either.

My OH ignored me and wore all the above. He "sat" on himself numerous times and by the end of the lesson had also managed to remove most of the hair on his legs from the jeans twisting..

My OH rides with cycling shorts (unpadded ones) under his jods.

He rode in an ancient pair of my black jods for a while until he decided he really wanted to try to learn to ride properly, then he got his own.

I think men naturally tend to ride with their feet further forward than us girls - all about protecting bits i guess....My instructor puts OH's stirrups up 3 holes to get him to drop his heels and he says it does work if he keeps to short efforts of it (like 20mins at a time) and then drops them back to the normal length so he doesn't get cramp!

Tight jersey underwear. I like Jack wills but any would do as long as the material is smooth. Regarding position, I found tucking my bottom under helped but the days learning rising trot and my first few jumping lessons were very painful...
