my show horse has come in from field today with really sore ears and bleedimg from were the flies have been gettimg at him, went out with fky spray snd mask but keeps pulling mask off ' anybodys elses had sore ears xx
In the 80's i had this problem before ears were available on the fly hoods. Some of the horses were so badly bitten you could not get a headcollar on them let alone bridle. I found Radiol Fly creme used it one night and next morning no bites, no yellow ears, no yellow fingers. I would use Radiol fly creme after 20 mins its effective for 24 hrs and It works 100% http://www.animalmedicationdirect.co.uk/radiol-fly-repellent-cream-for-horses-400g-pr-14.html
Some use sudocrem but ATEOTD that is antiseptic not a fly creme even if it works. I have never used it as Radiol keeps ears fly free and horse happy.
So glad it's not just mine, he's headshaking constantly at the moment, but it's definitely his ears causing the problem, anything and everything he can scratch them on he will. I've tried a fly mask with ears & he just pulls it off, fly mask without ears he keeps on.
I have been using thornit powder but because it's a powder I seem to have limited success actually getting it in his ears as opposed to down his face/me.
Leviathan - is that cream greasy at all? Do you find it makes the horses head-shy? Vet gave me some lotion for his ears last year but it started making him headshy so I had to stop using it, suspect it hurt rather than soothed somehow. How much do you put on - do you use it quite sparingly or do you have to slather it on? May well look at trying some of that, thankyou
Mine came in yesterday with sore patches on his ears and a couple of his face from the flies. I bathed him in Malaseb initially to make sure there were no nasty bacteria left there, then put a fly mask with ears on. I was debating using Aloe Vera or Sudocrem but just realised I've actually got some yellow fly cream somewhere so will use that.
