sore eye...any advice before we go to the vets?

Hi...OH was sawing a piece of wood on Sunday night and Mutley was mooching around trying to find scraps of wood to play with. He then ran under where OH was sawing and came out with fine sawdust all over his head.
We brushed off the dust and checked him over and he seemed fine.
However, this morning his left eye look red and had a little bit of a yellow blob (like sleep) which i wiped away.
His eye looks red but apart from the blob this morning and one again tonight he's had no further discharge, he's not rubbing it or blinking etc.
I'm taking him to the vets on Thursday but i was wondering if there was anything i should do in the mean time?
Do i wash it, put anything on it, leave it alone etc?

I wipe my dogs eyes with a cold tea bag that has been wet with hot water and that seems to help.

Thank you...my dad used to do that with me when i was a kid (always sticking my head in places it shouldn't and getting stuff in my eyes!!!) i didn't know it would work on Mutley?!!?

I've told hubby to put the kettle on...any excuse for a cuppa and when it's cooled we'll give it ago.
