horses eye nearly closed no real discharge or weepiness but eyelid looks swollen so assume she has bumped it or scratched it on her hay. have cleaned it with salt water and using eye ointment unopened suitable for eye infections .any other thoughts,

If it is still closed tomorrow i would call the vet. I dont think you can be too careful when it comes to eyes. If its closed you cant tell whether she has scratched the lens or whether she has anything in it. ( sorry i have a thing about eyes only got one left myself

make sure it's not an ulcer, my mare had one of these, with the same symptoms you are describing, when i looked in the eye i could just make out the ulcer as a slightly raised "patch" on her eyeball, best to be safe and call the vet, mine gave me some ointment and some bute, and because we caught it so quickly she was completley back to normal in 4 days.

Ohh be carefull with eyes. They can turn nasty very quickly and be expensive to cure. If caught early with be sorted so much quicker and cause less pain for poor pony.

Please get the advice of a vet...as already said...eyes are delicate and can be lost easiliy if ulcerated or there is a foreign body in it.

call a vet

I have just had a really tottering time with my daughters pony because her eye clouded up. I really wouldnt wait and would give the vet a ring immediately. If you explain what has happened let him/her decide if a visit is needed.

Eyes really easily disintergrate if you are not careful and your horse is keeping her eye closed for a reason.

I cant stress this enough- read my post 'Cloudy Eye' or my update to Amymay lower down.

Discussed this a lecture with vet last night. Always phone vets re swollen eyes as could be Equine Recurrent Uveitis.

My horse banged his eye in the box one night and in the morning it was partially closed. We used Brolene to great effect, you can get it in Boots, its an eye ointment for humans and a nurse recommended it.

update on eye used eye ointment and totally better by morning, understand all responses and obviously would have got vet if no improvement. had similar problem last summer called vet out and this is what they advised clean boiled water with salt and eye oinment used for humans.
