Was riding an uncut chappy today and he just wasn't right, he kept changing legs behind and he never does that. RI noticed one of his goolies (the right, as it happens) was retreating upwards. On closer inspection (a bit of a fondle) he does indeed have a sore goolie (up at the top) What could cause this and what would the next step be? (call vet, presumably, but RI/YO is rather lax in this respect)

Hi PF, how are you?

Is it hot or swollen or just plain sore? I used to have to fit a ball bag to a stallion I did as his 'goolies' would swing about and start hurting him when he was worked. He wasnt particulary well endowed by they 'swung low' when the temp went up-physical and ambiental. Try one and see if he's any happier. Photos are a must, I want to check that youve fitted it correctly

Hi Mairi, I'm well, thank you

Horse in question has HUGE goolies. I've always wondered if it got uncomfortable having them swing and slap around... Goolies are not hot or swollen, but very tender around the 'neck' on the right. Is there really such a thing as Ball Bag?

How is it fitted???

The one I used on the boy was easy. The front 2 lines ran under his belly and attached to the girth (like a martingale or whatever. The bag went where the bags meant to be and the other line came up between his hind legs and was fitted like a crupper but then continued on to the back of the saddle where it ended by being buckled on. Was a hell of a pallaver and the other grooms would take the pz out of me in continuation

. The horse was a grumpy sod who didnt take kindly to having his family jewels fiddled with which made it even more of a nightmare for me

You laugh, but I've had a couple that were kept entire then cut late (when it was decided not to present them for inspection) that moved MUCH better behind afterwards. Both were, um, well endowed and you could actually hear them "slap" once the horse started sweating. That CAN'T be pleasant.

I've also seen a few stallions that definitely moved wider behind the longer they worked. Not surprising, I guess.

All joking aside, there are a few things that can go wrong, most notably hernias and torsions. Stallions fairly regularly have to be castrated, at least partially, for such "complications" and I actually know one that died as an indirect result of a hernia. We also recently had a horse in for behavioural issues (bolting mostly) that turned out to have quite a serious torsion. The decision was made to geld him and it seems to have done the trick.

You know, I'd never given it much thought, but it does make perfect sense. Horse in question has VERY strange action behind, always attributed to a fall he had as a foal. Perhaps it's his goolies! I think YO mentioned gelding him, but I don't know how serious he is about it... he doesn't seem to geld much... *rolls eyes*
