My small native mare returned home from loan rather the worse for wear.

The main issue is her skin condition. She has never had any problems like this before. She had several small rubbed patches round ears neck etc and one very sore patch on belly that could just be seen while I was standing (she is small) I assumed Lice. Had a good look through mane and saw some wee critters. deloused with powder, twice. No more lice seen since.

So, the itching continues. Looked properly under belly, patch is really large and bald. Skins seems thick, several sore parts. By large I mean about a foot long from in front of teats to middle. several inchs wide.

Vet came monday, I don;t think this is conected to the lice, never seen anythign like it with lice, especially as they have been treated and gone. He had a good look and confirmed no lice. Advised Steroid cream but then said I would be using a silly amount, so gave me mud fever cream (which has steroid in it and is cheaper) and was going to post medicated shampoo out to me (not arrived yet)

So, have applied cream every day, then bathed and reapplied next day. Belly looks better for it, but two new patches have appeared where she has rubbed raw (actaully belly was worse the first day, very sore, but seems improved since then)

Obviously the cream is helping but the cause is still there.

Vet coming back monday, but just wondered if anyone has any ideas?

She is not scratching all the time, in fact I rarely see her itch, just the evidence.

Also in Veterinary.

This sounds a lot like how my TB looks at the moment. He came here underweight and after getting some food in him, he started getting loads of bald patches in the same places as yours. His belly had the same type of thing, his was really crusty and a bit oozy in some parts. Had vet out, said it was rain scald. Gave me Malaseb to wash him with. It's better now, the scabby bits are gone, but the baldness and flakiness is still there. :( This is what his face looks like, and there's more of it behind his ears and on his legs. He is also very itchy.
