Has anyone got any good ideas for treating a sore mouth? An 8 yr old TBX eventing mare, very keen hunter but comes back with a very sore mouth - which takes 7-10 days to heal enough to put a bit back in - either KK link, or thick egbutt snaffle(takes the **** in a hackamore!). It only takes a temper tantrum to make it sore again! Have tried covering it in Preparation H, and tried hardening it with Alum - any bit suggestions or alternative treatments gratefully considered!

Alum worked for my horse. I boght some chamois leather and stiched it around an eggbut snaffle. I would soak it in Alum and then pop the bridle on for half an hour. The other thing you could try is putting a few drops of lavender oil onto the corners of her mouth. I used to use this when I went back from hackamore to bit as it is a natural anaesthetic as well as helping toughen the skin. Dont be tempted wth vaseline this will makeit even softer.

I had this same problem with my little mare out hunting who just pulls and pulls and pulls. I asked the vet what to do and he said when its sore use Carmex lipbalm - comes in a tub with yellow lid from chemists. Then every time you go hunting whack a load of vaseline or petrolium jelly on the corners of the mouth and after a while the mouth should harden

My horse's mouth does this. I put lanolin (wool fat) in the corners of his mouth before I ride. It hasn't stopped it happening completely but it is a lot better I also find using a rubber mouth is nicer on his mouth then a metal one.

Don't use vaseline as it only makes the skin softer.
