My little mare has just developed a sore mouth, which is a bit strange as I have never previously experienced any problems with her mouth. I have always used a myler comfort snaffle on her and she has always been very happy with it.

I was wondering whether anyone had had experience of using methylated spirits to harden horses mouths. A friend of mine sent her horse, who has a notoriously sensitive mouth, to a show jumper who used meths to harden his mouth, but knowing nothing about it I am hesitant to wade straight in.

Any ideas on what I should do would be gratefully received as I have never had any problems with my horses having sore mouths before.

A little Bonjela followed by Vaseline - certainly don't want to dry up the skin but make it soft and elastic again.

Vitamin B deficiency can cause mouth splitting problems

Check you bit for sharp edges too.

Preperation H gel (piles cream) does the trick every time, i have a mare who is pink skinned and everything rubs/cuts her mouth. This year it has stayed unbroken and as soon as it looks pink i put this on.
Vaseline can actually make the problem worse as heats up when the bits rubs on it.

another here for Haemmoroid cream....youv'e just got to pluck up the courage to get it off the shelf and take it to the till!

Its fab for hardening and heals sore lips (my horse gets them after hunting if he's been pulling!).

I have terrible problems with my horses mouth splitting and have tried everything other than haemeroid cream so will give it a go; I use it on big nasty spots if I get one so have some to hand!
I have always used toothpaste to heal before but it does sting him quite a bit.
