Ive aquired 3 dachounds, i live on a farm which is mainly concrete { i also have a garden} all of the dachounds have come down with small red sore patches on their pads, i think its the concrete doing it, they are all limping { front pads} anything i put on the pads they lick off, i dont want to keep them locked up, will they toughen up if i just leave them, any ideas??

My Dobe bitch is forever skinning her pads, she runs across the garden and jumps the concrete path and just catches the edge of it sometimes. I just wash it off and put wound powder on it and it does heal, like you I live on a farm so rarely walk on the roads which I should do really to harden the pads.

I wouldnt keep them locked up as they do harden up to a certain extent, just make sure they dont get any grass seeds in there as that would be my main worry.

…….. so rarely walk on the roads which I should do really to harden the pads.

…….. .

I agree. Somehow tarmac seems to be the better medium for hardening pads, and I suspect that's because it's a little 'kinder'. My dogs live in kennels which have concrete floors, and so are fairly immune to its harsh effect.

Personally, I wouldn't be too quick to either wash off sore places, or apply any sort of ointment. Ointment would be more likely, I'd have thought, to soften the pad and so we're back to square one! It would also be the case that if you you leave them, then with sore pads they're more likely to be a bit more cautious, and by the process of walking carefully, and time, so as you suggest OP, the pads should harden on their own. It isn't neglect, it's allowing a process to continue without our well intentioned 'interference'!

Alec.

Are the dachsies getting access to stubble fields to run around in? That can also be the cause with some dogs of sore patches at this time of year.
