About 10 days ago I fetched my mare in from the field and she had blood all down her front leg. I looked closely and couldn't see anything specific so I took her to the hose to was her leg. As she put her head down to play with the water I noticed a huge sore patch on her chin. I cleaned it up and put some sudocream on. I thought she might had kicked herself while she was pawing the ground for her food.

However this sore doesn't seem to want to heal and today I noticed that it seems to be spreading round the bottom of her muzzle. I also noticed 2 small patches on each nostril.

The sore on her chin isn't as angry now as it was in the photo ( sorry not a good piccy as she wouldn't keep her head still) but it it is going crusty. It is a very difficult place to keep cream on as she rubs it off.

Has anybody else had this sort of problem?

This photo was taken today after she'd had a grooming session with my other horse. You can just about see the ' crust ' on the bottom of her chin. ( plus a white moustach from kissing her hairy boyfriend!!!)

Wee soul, google for "Buttercup rash" & have a peek through suggestions. Might be worth seperating from friends to avoid further irritation whilst healing though. Good luck :)

It wouldn't surprise me if it was an allergic reaction to some form of plant in her field as every summer without fail, she develops some skin problem. Her paddock is old meadow pasture and does have alot of different types of plant growing, however no buttercup flowers yet.

She never suffers with any problems during the winter months and grazes the same paddock winter and summer. Each horse has his own paddock so she has her friends either side.

I have been applying a special skin cream given to me by the vet. I will see what a couple of days regular application does, and if no better will take it further.

Honestly, my mare is such a princess and has a daily routine of creams and potions that would put any super model to shame lol

Hi Tic Tac, this looks very similar to something my boy has at the moment. On Weds he had a pea sized lump in his chin groove, by Thursday it was an open sore. I've cleaned with hibiscrub and it forms a cust but still doesn't look very nice. He also has two smaller warts towards his lip. It seems to be responding well to manuka honey at the moment. I have photos on my phone but don't know how to load them here! Interestingly, another horse at the yard had something very similar last year, but it was on his side. Again it was a lump that opened up and was hard to shift, forming a crust then falling off and weeping. Just as the vet was to be called it seemed to clear up. My instinct is that is seems to be some sort of fly bite/larvae, but can't find anything definite. Be interested to hear how you get on.

It is quite a strange one I must admit. One day when I was cleaning out her water bucket in the field, the rim around the top was covered in blood and at the time I didn't notice anything wrong with my mare. Must have been a couple of days later that the sore appeared.

I am currently treating it with some antibiotic/steroid skin cream that the vet gave me in the winter for some similar sore patches that appeared on the cannon bones of her white legs.. The chin is definitely not as angry now and the sore bits are slowly going leaving just bald patches at the moment.

The chin is not as easy place to medicate as the minute I put the cream on she wipes it off somehow!

forgot to mention that her chin does seem quite hard and can't really say whether or not this is normal for her as it's not a part of her body that I generally take much notice of!

I wouldn't panick too much. My mare gets these every year. I think hers are caused by buttercups. I just ensure that I put barrier cream on her chin and lips to help ease the sores and prevent them in the first place. It is more than likely that your horse is having an allergic reaction to something in your field. you just need to discover what to help you manage the problem. Good luck :-)
