My broodmare has a sore patch on her tum about 8 inches in front of her teats. She keeps asking for me to scratch it for her. It was bare and had flaky skin and hot. I thought I would help her and apply something soothing so put on aloe vera gel, that was a bit cold she said, not impressed. Then several days later I applied Sudocreme as she was still asking to be scratched, that was at the weekend, last night I noticed it was inflamed and weeping yellow pus-like serum, poor girl. I wondered what on earth I had done to her. I washed it with warm water and the most minutest amount of Hibiscrub, it is very sore. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have looked up Sudocreme on here and no one says it has blistered their horse like this. She is 7 months pregnant. I wondered if the yellow stuff was in fact colostrum building up, it was VERY sticky and very like what I remember the colostrum was like when I bred another foal years ago. I should know these things!!

Any pics? is it an area of the mammary tissue(where the mare will bag up in) or on the skin under her belly im having issues imagining it.
Is it hot to touch or the area slightly swollen? any change in the underlying skin..

If its on the teats then could be early mastitis. If its on the skin its quite possible a skin infection and may need antibiotics...
id be ringing your vet either way tbh.

colostrum should not be causing the skin to be that sore or inflammed as you have described,i suspect the yellow stuff could be either serum weeping from the damaged skin cells or liquid pus.

pics would really help, if it is at the lowest point of her belly, fluid naturally accumulates there in later pregnancy, so any skin infection might cause oozing of serous fluid.
I'd be speaking to vet too :)

Thank you for your replies. It's on her belly about the size of my hand and not looking very pretty tonight. Vet is coming first thing in the morning. Her udder looks fine unaffected it is nearer to her belly button than the teats. Managed to get her to eat half a sachet of danilon this morning, she is really suspicious of anything in her food, even vitamins! If she needs antibiotics I hope they can be injected!

She has had antibiotics and anti-inflammatory injections this morning. Vet not sure what it is, possibly a skin disorder exacerbated by her itching her tum on the ground, possibly not the Sudacreme as she had never heard of it having this reaction before! It has been cleaned up and I have some Aloe Propolis cream to apply to help form a barrier. She also has an abscess in her hind foot still, I had been treating this myself but obviously not well enough, so another dig and another poulticing session, getting good at that! Wish it would dry up out there!! The mud is not helping.
