<font color="red"> Hi,
My horse has come up with in the past week about 5 open sores on each side of her withers... she is madly itching them and i feel really sorry for her - lots of people have said that it was a reaction to the clipper oil (as i clipped her a week before the sores came up??) she is on whatever i could get my hands on:
lavendar wash
naf supplement - d-itch
global herbs - soother
carr and day martin - no-itch??

i need something to now heal them , not just stop the itching??!
Please any advice greatly appreciated!

Dilute hibiscrub and then neat lavender wash left on is good for random sores. Are they under the saddle area? Sometimes after clipping the horse can get bacteria in hair follicles under saddle and this causes lumps and/or sores. Make sure sweat cleaned off and numnah v clean.

Thank-You!! yes we are trying not to ride her, as saddle does sit quite close to them! using a fluffy nuu-med numnah though?? thanks again! x

thanks 'Babybells' we have not ridden her for a week now - we think the lavendar rinse may have been irritating her aswell!!!
its so, so complicated!!!!
:P

Not really.

Usually treat wounds with just warm water and if they don't heal or are serious - you make an appointment with the vet......

i would be very worried if my horse had open sores and scabs. i think amymays advice of vet is very very good advice as even putting a rug on could cause the horse pain and i myself would no way be riding her. You have asked for peoples advice so you have to except you will get honest answers. . . sorry if thats not what you want to hear you maybe shouldnt post!!

hey, this is another trikky post - i am new and to be honest i am on luvrofhorses side coz she is obviously worried about her horses welfare - sometimes a vet can be very expensive and sometimes you get a vet in and they say you didnt have to - she asked for advice not 'go to the vets' anyone could say that!
anyways i would suggest bathing your horse all over with tea tree oil shampoo (on a warm dasy) and see where it goes from there - also human hydrocortisone cream worked well for me!

Try this first. Very dilute Hibiscrub to wash the area, then dry it thoroughly. Don't apply anything to the area. If your horse is rugged , I assume it is since you have clipped, make a bridge from gamgee or similar to hold the rug completely clear from the wither- you might need to tack it to the rug lining to hold it in place. Also check that the rug is clean in that area too.

If this doesn't show signs of improvement in a couple of days consult your vet

If it's the clipper oil why does she only have them in one place and why are they on both sides? It sounds as if there is something else going on. Sorry, not trying to offend you but it's impossible for anyone to accurately diagnose on the internet, hence the suggestion to get a vet out. Non-healing sores that don't seem to have any cause - which seems to be what you are describing since you're saying neither the saddle or blanket could be involved - would be quite worrying.

Btw, most treatment is "boring" - keep the area clean, if necessary apply the least invasive preparation available. Anything that needs more than that - antibiotics, cortisone etc. - needs a vet because doing the wrong thing could be a disaster.
