Around this time last year my TBxID developed what i can only describe as circular open sores or ulcers on the inside upper of his 'lips!' because they were identical either side I assumed it was dental related. My dentist was not convinced but filed his tushes and descaled, he thought it may have been a type of bot. When they didn't clear I called out the vet, who said because they were the same either side it couldn't be bots and thought it was bacteria from his teeth. Then started weeks of Brushing his teeth!!! and fuciderm cream. they eventually cleared though i wasn't convinced it was due to all my efforts....not easy brushing horses teeth!! Anyway! this year him and two others have developed them!! They are sore to the touch and can be surrounded by pus at times. ANY IDEAS?????? They are all living out.

Hi,
are they any posinus (sp!) plants growing in their pasture? Sure i have read somewhere that a getting sores around the mouth can be a reaction to this, unfortuatly can't remember what plant it was! Sorry, sure someone more useful will be along soon!

I interestingly read a post on this forum about a month ago about mouth sores/ulcers which my mare gets every year. Answers varied from buttercups to worm larvae, however someone posted about putting bonjela on them to aid the healing process and having done just that I must say it has worked a treat on my horse!

Hope this is useful.

sorry. sounds a little bit like orf, but if no sheep (well lambs) then it wont be.
the pus filled blisters/ulcers on lips is pretty much identical explanation. they arent a problem, its the secondary infection which will just need a course of antibiotics.
