Hello!

I'm looking at changing my mares bedding, again. Going to try shavings this time.

Just wondering A) should I go for large or small flakes? She's quite wet, but generally in one spot. B) How many bales do you usually start with for a decently thick bed? She's got rubber matting, but I still prefer a thicker bed. Her stable is an odd size, roughly 11ft x 15ft.

Any suggestions of brands to avoid, very welcome. Need something affordable as I anticipate using a fair amount, dust extracted and absorbent.

Thanks!

Shavings tend not to be as absorbent as other options, but smaller is probably better. If £££s not a consideration hemp such. As aubiose is the best.

Smaller shavings tend to absorb more than large flake shavings.
Have you tried wood pellets under the shavings as they absorb much much better than shavings.

I currently use pellets under chopped straw, and have used them under miscanthus too. I will likely continue this under shavings in her wee corner!

Thank you :)

I love shavings, dont go for large flake, and a big bed deep stays cleaner than a small bed.

My boy can be dirty but is pretty clean on shavings. I have tried chopped straw, chopped rape, wood pellets and micanthus with various degrees of success. But shavings suit him the best

What are you changing from? Is your horse messy-as in walks in poops or just wet? or neat and tidy?

I'm lucky that both my geldings are tidy, the older one can be a bit messy on the odd occasion and he has EMS so when he's out of sync, he is known to pee a bit more. I succesfully use a wood pellet base with Bedmax large flake shavings on top. I used to despise Bedmax years ago when I had shavings only, as the flakes are so large I thought I was taking lots out every day, but I find this now works as it's mainly pellets that are absorbing everything and the Bedmax goes in the banks and on top. I also use Miscanthus from time to time on top of wood pellets.
