I was thinking of buying a fleece rug to go under George's stable rug and turnout rugs if it gets cold, would that be ok? Obviously a fleece has no filling so is there any indication of the warmth it provides? I.e. is it equivalent to a v thin rug or something warmer?

Thanks again!

i think they're quite warm, although probably not as warm as a quilt, but i'd probably keep it just for under the stable rug, because in my experience most under-rugs slip under nz rugs, and end up getting very muddy.

Thanks, sorry to sound a bit daft but I've never had to buy/think about rugs before! Think I will get a fleece to go under his stable rug and a thicker turnout to add to his MT Autumner turnout.

Georges mummy!!! You are so caring!

You need to think about what sort of clip you are going to give him before you invest in billions of rugs! If he has a trace clip and is in at night your MW turnout and MW stable rug should be plenty! If you have a full clip then you will need heavyweights or under rugs. Personally I prefer one rug at a time as i like as few straps as possible.

If you get a breathable MW turnout you can leave that on at night in the stable if you need to! Remember they do have a fur coat!!

But this is coming from someone who has 4 to keep. Perhaps if I had only one it would be pampered too!!

I also live in the South of England and this makes a difference!

ETA I always have a spare turnout rug in case one gets damaged and needs repair mid season. I think this would be a better investment.

Oh dear I'm so confused (quite obvious from all my rug posts!), ok George will have a minimal clip and I live down south in Essex and he will only be out during the day. At the moment I have:
Thin cotton waffle rug
150g Mark Todd quilted stable rug
150g Mark Todd Autumner turnout rug

I was going to buy a 220g turnout rug with high neck, and a thicker stable rug - or would a fleece under the 150g one do the job? Oh heavens I think I'm losing the plot!

Why not get a mediumweight turnout and use it for indoors and out? Nothing wrong with that! And just how thin is your waffle rug? I always found that a fleece made a very warm layer under my stable rugs, and I really just needed a sheet so I bought a CoolMasta rug (very thin sheet) to go underneath stuff. Personally I don't layer turnouts at all (and rarely do with stable rugs) as the under-rug slips so easily when they're out. Resulting in chest rubs, wither rubs, and a soggy wet under-rug at the back where it's stuck out! IMO it's worth getting a thicker turnout instead of layering. If I were you, I'd get a mediumweight turnout and leave it at that. If you need more rugs later if he's getting cold, you can buy them as and when necessary rather than buy them then not use them!

I don't usually bother to even change into stable rugs TBH. If the horse comes in soaking wet and you take the rug off, the rug won't dry over night. Leave it on the horse and the body heat will dry it, then you have a dry rug for the morning.

have done this for last couple of years and have had no probs.
modern materials are amazing.

(rremember old heavy, wet canvas one?no thank you!!!)

I never layer, more straps, possibility of slipping and rubbing.

Personally I would have a lightweight (no fill), medium weight 200g (ish) and a heavyweight, at least 350g, turnout rugs.

You wont ened any more stable rugs if you get breathable turnout rugs.

Unless you have a rug fetish like me, who has a stable rug of every weight and horses that live out!

It must just be really damp at all the yards i've ever been at then as none of mine have ever dried when I've taken them off at night! I only take them off now if they're absolutely sodden (like when stupid horse broke the leg straps, rolled in a puddle then got the inside of his rug soaked as well as outside

) and I have a spare of the same-ish weight for the next day.

you're not losing the plot, you just care about your horse

As you have 2 lightweights at the moment I would be tempted to get a mediumweight turnout but go for a breathable one so you can use it in the stable as well. It would also be worthwhile getting 2 so you have a spare as you can guarantee that something will happen to it and then you'll be glad of the spare.

Ahhh I hadn't cottoned onto the idea that I could use the turnout in the stable too - problem solved! I have just ordered a weatherbeeta taka high neck turnout 250g that is breathable, so assuming it fits ok that will be great and then when I can afford it I can get a spare. By the way if anyone's interested it was £70 off on equestrian clearance - yeah!

don't worry I had a full wardrobe for indoor and outdoor rugs for Pidge when I first got him, plus spares

"I do not have a rug addiction

" however when he filled out and put weight on (he was very underweight when I got him) I needed to buy 7' or 7'3" rugs for him so went down the breathable turnout rugs route and it worked fab this last winter

As long as when you bring them in they are dry underneath the rug it dries overnight from their body heat, if you take it off it takes several days to dry.
Bargain on the rug makes it so much better doesn't it
grin.gif
you now have another £70 to spend on horsey bits

Wet turnout rugs dont work well with paper bedding!!
grin.gif

Hence I tend to remove wet rugs!

Try to get a spare turnout before you actually need it. You can guarantee that the day the rug gets damaged there wont be the right size available in the tack shop!

fleece rugs are lovely and cosy, i noticed tesco were doing a fleece full neck, recently reduced, they are not cheap, like most horsey stuff! i think a fleece would go well under another rug for extra warmth should you horse need it
